Drainer bracket fallen off, recommend a glue? Empty Drainer bracket fallen off, recommend a glue?

Post by DavidinDevon Thu Jul 01, 2021 6:32 pm

On our new Broadway, the metal plate attaching the drainer to the glass sink lid has fallen off.  My attempts to re-glue it have failed.

Can anyone recommend a glue suitable for attaching a flat metal plate to a glass surface?

Thanks
David

Wow, you actually use the drainer? Ours lives in the loft.

It’s a new van so I would ask either AS or the dealer to send you some glue.

Don't know where our drainer is Tinny.

In my opinion it's one of the dafter "innovations" of recent years.

(Tin hat on, as loads of others pontificate about how useful it is!!  Whistle1 rolleyes  hugegrins )

I fall into the other camp, and use it always, albeit that I use a small plastic clamp gripping the rear window blind frame in order to retain the glass cover vertical.

Wouldn't gorilla glue work?

Thanks, Tinwheeler. But I’m not impressed with the glue used by AS either.

I suppose the drainer could be useful when washing up in the loft. Do you use the overflow tank for that?? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sorry ours is still stuck after 6 years. Brand new, get the dealer to fix it.

Ignore the comments given, we use ours every time we wash up, one of the better bits  smile! smile! up! up! Hard hat time.

Thanks, Richard. I agree it’s the dealer’s responsibility, but I just had a battle even to get them to supply the missing wifi router, so I’m not hopeful!

Phone Autosleeper. You are doing them a favour by pointing out that this particular glue didn’t work. They should send you a tube of something that will work.

( Seven years later and ours is still firmly stuck and used every day for at least 5 months of the year so they must have been able to use a good glue in 2013)

Glass to metal bonding can be quite a challenge because glass moves with temperature. My go-to adhesive for this would be CT1. I’ve used it a lot in property refurbishment and have had complete confidence in it. I use it for anything difficult and where I want to take no chances.

It’s applied with a skeleton gun and isn’t cheap unless you have other bonding tasks you can use it on in a reasonably short period. See first link below.

The second link is from the same manufacturer but discusses their glass to metal product. I don’t have experience of it and would recommend CT1 because it has wide application, so you could use it elsewhere before it goes off.

My business is involved in the glass industry and we use the adhesive below for bonding glass to metal, its a very good product and does exactly what it should do but it isn't cheap once you have bought the dispenser and mixing nozzles.

3M adhesive pads came out best in an Auto Express trial, over more traditional liguid adhesives.

Like others, I do not use the drainer now but a few years ago, the bracket holding it to the glass came away and I reglued it using Araldite 2 part epoxy resin glue, available everywhere. As I no longer hang the rack from it, there's no strain on it any longer but the bracket is still firmly fixed to the glass so that I could use the drainer if I decided to.

Thank you, All.  Many excellent suggestions.

Ssjohnl, my first instinct was Araldite but I was put by the fact that if you ever needed to stick it again, you couldn’t get rid of the remaining Araldite except by burning it off!

The dealer is Marquis.

This week however I persuaded them to supply the missing wifi router! Well they said they would, I don’t actually have it yet. But I have every confidence!

Best of luck, I actually did not find them too bad at Lower Upham when I had the Topaz, but that was 14 years ago before the management things.

We keep the glasses in the cabinet in our lounge at home and they sparkle nicely in the light.

The last lot of crockery was horrible and that's also in the loft along with the big table and surplus scatter cushions, plus the plate rack, bottle clips and table leg clip - that one's a right arm ripper [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

If it’s still under warranty go to the dealer, AS do not stick the metal plate to the glass lid they come from the supplier with this already in place
