Thank you for posting those photos, Mike. I'm sure they'll be very helpful. Wish I'd seen them when my Hartal springs broke!
Perhaps Mods might consider moving this to a Factsheet?

Re: Hartal door lock springs
Thanks Mike I'm the culprit folks, it was me who asked Mike for help and he generously took the photos and added the annotations for clarity. I had already bought the replacement spring but was a bit worried about venturing into the unknown (Hartal pointblank refused any assistance). The spring (no1) was accessed without having to completely remove the half moon panel. The spring is held in place with a circlip and washer.
I second Cymro's suggestion of moving this (and the other thread on Mike's actuator repair) to a factsheet, this issue has come up several times in the past and will surely prove useful to forum members.

Bottom spring just broken. Is it always the bottom spring? I've just sent an order to Autosleepers Spares Dept - does anyone know if they've got them in stock at present please?

Re: Hartal door lock springs
Thanks for posting this, Mike.
I have just discovered that one or possibly two springs on the lower catch of my Hartal door has broken as that catch does not flip over properly when latched as it should (and as the top latch does).
As recommended I have looked in the A/S spares catalogue and found this page
It looks as though the first two are miirror images - one for the bottom catch and one for the top, presumably, and they also look like Spring 1 in your photos. Is thatthe one that breaks because I cannot see anything that resembles your Spring 2 and their third illustration does not resemble anything in your photos.
It may be obvious when I dismantle but I woudl rather buy the bits first, particularly in this inclement weather.
I'd be grateful fo ryour experience.
Thanks

Re: Hartal door lock springs
Hi Ron,
I’m afraid I’m not much help on this, I was actually replacing the lock actuator and not the springs. I took the photos for Tony (Askit) who was replacing his.
I’ll check on my desktop as I think I have more photos but I’m not sure if they will make it any more clear.
Neither of those springs seem right to me, the ends are not bent in the right directions, might they be for the newer door. If I remember correctly the third spring could be from the door handle assembly.
Mike

Re: Hartal door lock springs
Ron, the first spring pictured (bottom catch spring) is what I replaced. I still have the invoice but it has no part number on it. It is referred to as the "old hartal door spring" as there is apparently a newer type of door used in later models.

I would be interest to know if A/S now have these springs in stock, when I wanted one they said they were not being manufactured. I finished up by making one myself, well actually I made 6 but only one worked

Peter, they display the springs online but often they are out of stock. I have tried on a couple of occasions to order one (just in case ) but they've had none. When I suggested to a new member who needed one they should contact AS for one, I got a reply suggesting they were rather frustrated with my suggestion (work it out for yourselves ).

Looking for advice please
Hi Mike and anyone else who can assist please,
I’ve got the same issue on both locks now!! I have the door skin peeled back, but when I went to fit the lower spring first (spring 1) I can see where the longer wiggly end goes into but I can’t see where to attach or locate the shorter end with the 90 degree bend.
Hope that makes sense and any advice/help gratefully received.
Thanks
Jim

pm from Askit (Tony) on 2/8/20:
I remember you were interested in the spring replacement process so I thought I would pass the photos to you. It was pretty straightforward, once I'd got the plastic screw covers out of the door handles The door trim prised up easily enough, I was able to get to the bottom lock without taking the trim off completely. Spring 1 was the culprit and seems to be the one that most commonly fails. The only thing I would add to Mike's photo is the other end of the spring goes into a small lug, just visible behind the main part of the spring. Fitting the new spring requires the small circlip and washer on the spindle holding the spring to be prised off and replaced after the new spring is fitted.

Cymro, thanks for posting my message. I can barely remember writing that but my additional bit to Mike's photos made sense at the time (at least to me ).
Cookie859, welcome to the forum. Sorry I can't add to the stuff posted except to say there are old and new Hartal doors with different door springs. Hopefully you have the correct ones for your MH.

Re: Hartal door lock springs
I only took the photos for Tony while I had the door inner off and didn’t remove the springs myself. I’ve looked at other photos I took at the time, I never delete photos, and found this one were you can see the spring is anchored in a hole in the black plate I’ve indicated with the arrow.
I hope this along with the contributions from Cymro and Askit helps. You may have to zoom in on the photo to see it.
Mike

Re: Hartal door lock springs
Good new for me! My Hartal door always seemed to have a gap at the bottom of the long edge since new and over the last few years the bottom latch has been a pig to engage in cold weather, so much so that yesterday I decided to make.a determined effort to find what was wrong. Adjusting the striker hoop made little difference - too tight and the bottom bounced out, looser and the door wasn't fully closed. I wondered if it was a lubricant problem or a spring so removed the panel. It took quite a time to discover that the pawl which holds the catch in both the full closed and half closed positions had some thick grease that was resisting the tension on spring 2 in the picture above. A spay with some WD40 followed by some 3 in 1 has freed it off, allowing the striker hoop to be adjusted fully and the door to close tightly. RESULT - and no need for new springs.
I do wonder if the grease might cause springs to fail.
PS I should have said that door no longer needs slamming - the catches actually pull it shut rather than having to slam it to persuade the catches to hold iit n place
