Down Plating Gloucester
Hi Everyone
While flicking through Ebay as you do I noticed a AS Gloucester for sale and surprised to see it rated at 3500kg not 3880kg.I thought it was a mistake by the dealer but when I checked the DVLA website yes 3500kg was correct. For those with more knowledge than me, if I down plated my Gloucester how much payload could I expect to have bearing in mind I have a tow-bar ,bike rack and unusually a spare wheel fitted. As we often wild camp we take water with us but that would have to probably change.
regards
Alan

Re: Down Plating Gloucester
Have you weighed your MH ladened? AS quote the MIRO at 3395kg (auto) leaving 105kg user payload if plated at 3500kg. Deduct weight of passenger, any extra for driver over 75kg, gas bottles (25kg?) and towbar (15kg?) and I expect you are over 3500kg before you add bikes, spare wheel, food, drink and other personal items. There is a reason Gloucester/Malvern is sold as 3880kg weight.

Hi
Thank you for that, you have really confirmed what I was thinking. It surprises me that it can be used down plated to 3500kg

But you are banned from many roads with a 3.5t limit, pay extra for tolls in Austria etc AND have to have a medical every 3 years if you are over 70.

That may be true, but even so, does it make any sense to own a luxury motorhome with a payload of 105 kilos? I can't see why anyone would want to do that unless they have an extremely minimalist lifestyle, or unless they were intending to run overloaded most of the time and hoping not to get caught?

Re: Down Plating Gloucester
We've thought about this as being over 3.5t is a drawback and the way to keep the payload is to tow the 'weight' in a trailer. One of the main reasons we started with a motorhome is that we didn't want to tow and that is still the case. The van (Malvern 3880kg) is (after 7 years) still exactly what we want, so it will be medicals every three years, Gobox in Austria and all the other paraphanalia.
