2006 Nuevo silencer box
My MOT reported serious corrosion on the bottom of the exhaust silencer box. Given the reported difficulty in getting replacement parts for older vans, and not wanting to spend much on a van Emission Regulations may make unviable next year, I am thinking of quick fixes.
Is there anything I can coat the box with, or cover it with, that will extend it’s life, please?
Thanks
Peter

Just wondering why you think your van will be unviable next year due to emissions. I had a 2006 Nuevo up to 2017 and never had a problem, in fact I don't recall it ever having the probe inserted in the exhaust unlike the car tested at same station. Im pretty sure it only had a visual check for smoke. Is your van particularly high mileage?

Thanks Paul. No it is the emissions classification of the age of the van when Manchester adopts the clean air policy, for which they have already started putting up the gantries. It just puts a question mark on where to go from then. So we don’t want to spend anything on the van that will not benefit us if we sell or trade in.

Ah. If the serious corrosion appears on the MOT certificate and therefore online as well, any buyer may use that to lower your price therefore it may be wise to replace it beforehand.

For many years, Holts have made a range of products for exhaust repair under the Gun Gum product name - two of those being an exhaust repair putty and a repair tape. I've used both (in the distant past) and I don't recommend either.
There are several problems with them: Firstly the thermal stresses on an exhaust mean that nothing adheres well unless welded-on. Secondly, they tend to absorb road spray under the vehicle, and that accelerates the rusting. And thirdly they cannot be applied neatly, so they are a visual clue to any buyer that the vehicle is being bodged.
As Paul suggests, it's probably wise to have the box replaced, on the assumption that your buyer will see that it is being maintained regardless of cost.
