Welcome, is there not a big on/off switch next to the microwave for power? Also it only works when on a mains hookup of course.

Welcome to the forum Mark and Margaret  allthumbz  Assuming you have the same setup as we have, the main switch for the microwave is located next to the wine glasses (as v8oholic says when you are on mains).

The switch is to the left of the glasses under the microwave and is as said by Adkit only of use when you are on a ehu

Yes, by what you describe, that is the microwave switch that will indicate ready to use by initial beep and microwave lights up with 'O' seen on cooking time setting. Sorry can't give reason why yours is not operating other than a fuse problem?

Further, if your microwave is same as ours, Daewoo KOR-6L6BDBK,  instruction manual states, 'The oven doesn't work', Check for blown circuit fuse or tripped main circuit breaker in your house.
Of course, this refers to any electrical equipment in a domestic situation. There's been mention on this forum that due to overheating on lengthy cooking times, this microwave can turn itself off. Thereafter once cooked down will operate again. Also, some members have changed microwave for other make.
