Pensioners must do their bit!!!!
Lord Bichard god bless him! has suggested that pensioners should help to look after 'very old people' or risk losing some of their state pension.
As it seems we are a burden on the state
Also that the younger generation are paying for our retirement. Nothing said that we have spent the last 50 years paying for our own retirement
The think tank says..."The older generation benefits from public funds, in the form of health care and pensions but younger people have to rely on 'private transfers' of wealth, such as FAMILY MONEY " Don't they realise that This family money comes from us lazy pensioners in the first place. And how many of you, like us, have had to donate our valuable retirement time in free child minding for the 'worse off' younger generation and saved them scores of thousands of pounds which they would have had to find for professional child minding.
Lord Bichard is obviously so far from the real world, but he is also a pensioner!! wish I had his pension

I wonder which "very old people" he is looking after!
By the way, you haven't been paying for your own retirement for the last 50 years (assuming you mean the state pension), as your contributions went to support the previous generation. May parents' contribution paid for my grandparents' pensions. My grandparents' contributions paid for.... Oh! They didn't make any contributions, just drew their pensions when they retired!

Re: Pensioners must do their bit!!!!
Hi there,
Thanks for that. I have just checked this man out and discovered that he has had a typical "go into government as a Civil Servant, stay as a Civil Servant, get paid as a Civil Servant, retire as a Civil Servant" type of career; and he now appears to be looking for the trough to dip his nose in and eke out his own meagre State Pension!!
What is really telling bout this man's moral standards are his "then" and "now" profiles.
THEN
"In 1995, Bichard was made Permanent Secretary of the Department for Employment. When it merged with the Department for Education (DfE) to form the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE), he became Permanent Secretary of the combined department....."
NOW
"He is an advisor to Ten Group in its professional support services division which comprises the support service for school leaders (The Key) and the support service for school governors (Ten Governor Support)."
Check out: http://www.tengroup.com to see what Ten Group actually do. (It is mainly what my Mum would have called "a money for old rope business"!)
Of course what the man is doing isn't illegal but in my mind it leaves a very nasty smell behind it and he sure as hell is in no position to start telling us, his elders and betters, what we should be doing!
Best regards,

Interesting reading Ian. The man is certainly trying to make his mark on 'The Big Picture'.
Bet he has a very comfortable retirement. Hope he...... no mustn't say it

Perhaps Lord Bichard think we spend our time swanning around the countryside instead of doing all the things that once upon a time was provided by the State.
Well, up to a point he is right.

Yes, I'm sure "Lord" Bichard will be scrimping and saving to make his state pension last each week...
He seems to miss the point that voluntary work ceases to be "voluntary" if you are forced to do it to get your state pension.
But then this government can, for example, choose to change to a completely inappropriate index for pensions (CPI, which was designed to allow analysts to compare the economies of different countries, and not as a measure of increasing cost of living) so why not? None of the people making these decisions will be adversely affected by them in any significant way.

I suppose a group of us locals fall into that category. About ten of us are members of R.S.V.P (Retired – Senior Volunteer Persons) which is recognised by the national “Community Service Volunteers” We, like many of the forum members, all have specialist skills of one sort or another and householders can request help with a vast range of small tasks which they are unable to get tradesmen to do. The service, which is free, is aimed at the older/single/disabled person and is advertised in local newspapers, libraries and community centres. We are happy to accept donations to the service and most people are grateful enough to do so. We only claim our mileage.
It’s a good way to exercise your redundant skills and we meet some interesting people.

Bob,
I applaude all such organisations and the people who volunteer their services.

The point is that most of us do it not because we fear punishment but because we enjoy helping our fellow man.

When a self-serving (check out his profile) prat like Brichard starts telling me what to do I tend to just do the very opposite!

Best regards,

Ian

Sorry, but I can not see the likes of our MP'S doing any of the work mentioned, or forced to do it or suffer a loss of thier pension.
Imagine our P.M. and his merry band trying to help Grace down the road with, well anything really!
Oh sorry, this is just for us lowly pensioners, right, thought I had got it wrong.

Sadly
I feel very sorry for these people (Politicians etc) They live in a completely different world than 99% of us do and have no idea how people live outside the Palace of Westminster.
