Habitations?
I have had a few motorhomes over the years and without fail have always kept to the annual habitation checks.
Recently I was told by another Motor homer that he never bothers with the Habitation certificate unless he intends to sell the MH, relying on the fact that it's only the relevant cert that is needed to sell.
What do others do?

I've never had a habitation certificate, on any of my vans.
Never been asked for one when I sold either - though the last time I changed vans was more than 10 years ago now.

I echo Roopert's experience. There is no certificate needed to sell a van to the best of my belief. Dealers don't seem to care at all if you’ve had hab checks done when you p/ex and the only requirement for them is to maintain a warranty.

Re: Habitations?
We use our van and all that's inside it a lot so I know whether things are working or not but not necessarily how well they are working or how safe they are. I'm a competent and experienced engineer but I'm not qualified to work on gas appliances and I don't have the specialist kit needed for most of the safety checks plus my sight is not what it was and I have trouble getting into small spaces and under the van.
So I do have an annual habitation check BUT its done on my drive by a chap I now know well and trust and I consider a significant pert of the value of having the check done is maintaining a relationship with someone who can do what I can't.
With respect to the record of the check, any dealer will ignore it and do his own check and a private buyer is probably incline to commission his own check.
PS up till about six years ago I was as Roopert but thing move on.

I used to have annual check by mobile engineers but around here they seem to start up and disappear within a few months so never got to build a relationship with them. Now for the last 3 years I've simply had a gas safety check done by a Gasit approved service centre (I know Gasit is no more) who checks each appliance for pressure and correct working. Everything else is done by myself - like Peter I know when something is working or not. I don't need someone to check if rooflights open and cupboard handles work. I read on another forum of a main dealer who charges £340 and takes over 4 hours.

Re: Habitations?
When we bought the Rienza part of the warranty was a habitation check. When the warranty finished we had a habitation check carried out locally and they found damp under the locker door that was not mentioned previously. It took a lot of persuasion for the dealer to honor the warranty.
Until the pandemic we paid for a local annual check but the company ceased trading. It was difficult to find anyone to do a check when people starting using their motorhomes again so we left it until things slowed down to normal.
After a bit of thinking we decided to not bother. So far any faults that have occurred would have not shown up on a check and I have been able to sort them myself.

Many thanks for the comments so far, do keep them coming as I am sure others will be interested.
On another note, had I have entered this topic onto the other site that I have decided to leave it would have encouraged so much bickering, sly digs and insults. Intelligent conversation would have been lost.
I do remember reading an article on here where it was asking for donations, if the content of that piece could be sent to me or entered here, I will gladly send you the £20 that I have saved.

Unfortunately no forum is immune from a bit of bickering, but some handle it better than others! We have the occasional difference of opinion, but things tend to stay good-natured here. I've been on other forums where insults and threats have been thrown about (not by me, I should add).
