LPG gauge
We have recently obtained our Malvern which has an LPG tank. The gauge said it was about 1/4 full so we topped it up took almost 20 litres - and it still says 1/4 full! Is this a common problem? We are not sure how LPG compares to the propane canisters we were using in our old motorhome. Presumably it is used at a similar rate? We are new to LPG (it took us ages t work out the pump on the first fill!) so any advice gratefully received

Re: LPG gauge
Most of us suffer with wildly inaccurate gauges (although reliably inaccurate if that makes sense!) but I’ve not heard of your issue. 20 litres indicates that it was pretty much on empty.
I’m not sure how the gauge picks up the gas levels but I’m sure someone will be able to help soon.

Re: LPG gauge
What type of gauge do you have ,if it’s a gaslow bottle and gauge it takes a while for the amount to register on the gauge

Re: LPG gauge
The gas gauge on my van is a series of lights, one red and eight green. Was not confident of any accuracy so have been recording lights showing at fill and how much gas goes in when filling up to eight green, which it does each time. The inaccuracy has turned out to be reasonably accurate with the same ish litres for given light showing. One green before red I now take as half full.
Might be worth adopting similar strategy to see if a patern appears.

That is the same as I get, no real problem, as like you I know when it shows one green I am ok as I never have got more than 10 ltr of gas in when I refill.Kdc wrote:The gas gauge on my van is a series of lights, one red and eight green. Was not confident of any accuracy so have been recording lights showing at fill and how much gas goes in when filling up to eight green, which it does each time. The inaccuracy has turned out to be reasonably accurate with the same ish litres for given light showing. One green before red I now take as half full.

Same as with the cold water and waste

Re: LPG gauge
Not getting more than 10ltrs in with one green showing and believing it’s around half full is not far out,20ltr tank at 80% (which is what it will fill to ) is 16ltrs full, so 8-10 Ltrs is close enough to call it half a tank and give some thought to finding next fill.

There's a YouTube video on how to repair the gauge if you feel it necessary.....

No requirement to isolate main valve before filling tank.

Sounds about right for me too.Kdc wrote:Not getting more than 10ltrs in with one green showing and believing it’s around half full is not far out,20ltr tank at 80% (which is what it will fill to ) is 16ltrs full, so 8-10 Ltrs is close enough to call it half a tank and give some thought to finding next fill.
Mine looks like this here. Interestingly it states "Please note - this GAS IT sender unit and GAS IT LED level indicator is not a calibrated unit and as such the tanks contents displayed can vary."!!!

Re: LPG gauge
The tank is 25 litres which at 80% capacity holds 20 litres, I tend to fill up at 2 lights showing and it takes 13/14 litres.

Re: LPG gauge
Just filled up after being away for 6 nights, all off grid, really nice CL.
Gauge was moving from red to all 8 leds as it pleased.
Could only get 8.9ltrs in so plenty in reserve.
I filled up on the way to site, so I take it we used 8.9 ltrs over 6 nights, 7 days, well it was hot, fridge on full blast keeping food and beer cool

Re: LPG gauge
Haven’t done many off grid nights away this year, always had hook up. So haven't had to use gas heating or water heating, only using gas for cooking (and even then using electric ring) when we need the oven. Heating is the big user, cooking uses very little as does the fridge. I haven't filled gas tank for almost a year and still shows full (I have older gauge which only has red light and 4 green lights). We are on a rally right now without electric so be interesting to see what gauge reads when we leave.
