Bloody rain. Will it never end? Worst summer ever.

Re: Weather
I said exactly that to someone we met while walking the dog yesterday, and they just looked completely blank . . . and started protesting that it was a wonderful summer.

Re: Weather
It is a bit comedic when you know that there will be a news story saying the weather (whatever it is) has been a disaster for farmers, too much sun, not enough sun, too much rain, not enough rain, too cold, too hot, too snowy, too windy..........
The weather, saviour of slow news days for the broadcast media

Re: Weather
They keep telling us that we will have heatwaves such as we've had more often. Well it's been 42 years since the summer 76 that they keep comparing this year to, so how much more often are we talking about, 20 years, 30 years ??

Apparently Roman vineyards flourished all over a much warmer England 2000 years ago.
There was skating and fairs on the frozen Thames every year back in Victorian times.
Massive snowfalls and ice cut off my parent's village for months back in 1947.
The only thing missing from these events was hysterical wall to wall media coverage..

Re: Weather
Walking down the road on the first day of rain for a couple of months and said good morning to a neighbour, his response was “summer’s back”

Re: Weather
I only trust the weather forecasts on the Beeb
Our local (STV) forecast is pretty good but, generally, ITV regional forecasts are not very helpful.
Weather warnings do seem to happening more often, suspect it has much to do with derrière covering

Re: Weather
I would have assumed that reports are based on computer modelling so should be based on the same patterns with both local and national reports from the BBC. However it is not uncommon for discrepancies but the national seems to be the most likely outcome.

How are you all fairing today? We're basking in -4c, up from an overnight -7c but no snow as yet. The visit to our local supermarket may be postponed

Hi Tony, we are much the same, -5c overnight, now nice and sunny but absolutely freezing. Got a job to do outside but putting it off 'till afternoon hoping it gets a little milder.

Re: Weather
I'm delighted it's started snowing, it has started a media feeding frenzy and Brexit has been forgotten YEAAAAh!! There was no mention of the B word at all on the news bulletin I listened to at breakfast time. There were reporters from various parts of the country standing in a sprinkling of snow telling us about schools being closed, vehicles stuck and dire warnings of the dangers of leaving home. The BBC had a reporter standing on a flyover with two lanes of traffic flowing past steadily on wet but clear lanes although the hard shoulder had a covering of snow. He enthusiastically announced that only two lanes were open. Funny, its only a two lane carriageway DOH!!!
I hate to hark back to the past, but I remember snow drifts and driving snow covering roads, but we still seemed to be able to get through with a bit of intelligent driving. The only difference now seems to be the huge number of massive articulated HGVs that seem to get stuck on the slightest slippery gradient, forcing everything else to a halt. Even schools shut down at the merest sight of snow because of the 'Danger to Children'. I remember snowy school days were the best of all, trudging to school in my wellies, making ice slides in the playground and of course snowball fights. None of that allowed now of course, which is probably why nobody has any resistance to the endless colds and sniffles due to the days off in centrally heated recirculated air at home.
Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man!

Re: Weather
Roger can I join your grumpy club? Yesterday I was to be going out in the evening at 7.00pm. However in the late afternoon my phone pinged. A weather warning from the Met Office. Heavy snow from 8.00pm. Going to the website confirmed all this with dire warnings. BBC 6.00pm news and weather. Warnings of heavy snow. Local news (I live in London) confirmed warnings AND reported Transport for London advised all to finish any journeys by 9.00pm. However interestingly not a word on the TFL website. I decided to stay at home. 8.00pm the merest dusting of snow. 11.00 pm it started but nothing that heavy. I could have gone out.
Lunchtime news ...reporters desperately trying to find train delays, roads closed, traffic jams. Nothing just the obligatory children downhill sledging. Presumably the schools are closed.
Anyway I'm pleased all the millions pumped into new technology to improve weather forecasting has not been wasted.
Come back Laurie West with his magnetic suns and clouds that invariably fell off when he was waving his arms about. Or have I just dated myself?

Oh Roger. Just noticed where you live. You will be delighted to hear that a reporter live on an east coast train this morning reported scenes of snow out of the window. I know the line well as I often go by train up to Leeds. Sounds rather pleasant.

Re: Weather
Nice Al, don't you venture out without the knotted hankie on your head
Odd phenomenonhere yesterday. As the sun came up and the rays hit our frost covered back garden, as the (guessing now) vapour rose from the grass it froze in the air. The effect was like glitter rising up from the ground into the upper atmosphere.
Still no snow but -5c right now so I'll need to get wrapped up to go for the papers
