I am from a fairly useful engineering background but still struggling with the new fangled electronics used these days.

Welcome to the forum AJC. I am sure you will find it a font of knowledge and diverse opinions.
I know what you mean about advancing technology. I totally understand our 22 year old motorhome and I can "fix" most things on it. When I look at the current motorhomes other friends have I know I wouldn't stand a chance of trying to diagnose or fix half of the things which could go wrong.
