After effects of. Curry. Empty After effects of. Curry.

Post by Bilbobaggins Tue Oct 20, 2020 10:28 am

When we bought our motorhome in the summer SWMBO decided she didn't want melamine crockery and after a bit of searching on line she found some Vango crockery made from bamboo. It is lightweight, and colour matches the van so she is happy..at least she was.

When away in the van at the weekend I decided a curry would be just the thing for tea on Sunday night, unfortunately I am now being accused of ruining the crockery as the bowl I used has changed from beige to bright orange inside as a result of the  curry. In my defence I don't the the damage is any worse than a pasta sauce or tomato soup would do.

Is there an easy fix or do I just need to live with the ongoing recriminations?

On the bright side I now have a bowl I can use for future curries with a clear conscience. hugegrins

Can't see the difference between melamine and bamboo so its her fault for not wanting the melamine. We've had our set of melamine for probably 20 years and apart from the mugs which have been replaced every couple of years, the rest is as good as when we bought it.

Melamine every for time for us too, lightweight, doesn’t clang about when on the move and pretty much indistructable. The cups need a soak in bleach water occasionally to remove the Tea and Coffe stains.

I’ve just had a quick look at Corelle online as we're looking to replace just the plates for next season.
Looks good stuff but I’d appreciate hearing from you guys why exactly you rate them rather than simply reading the sales bluff

Just a personal thing, corelle is more like eating off china than melamine, to me it just feels less plastic, others may have a different view!

Yes. Melamine is OK (just) but it's still plastic!

It's actually glass, although it doesn't look like it. "Corelle dishes are made of Vitrelle, a glass laminate of three thermally-bonded glass layers."

Almost unbreakable too - but not quite!  :0_blush:

I only eat the food, never the crockery, so don't care much what its made from as long as its the following:-

1 Cheap
2 Light weight
3 Doesn't rattle
4 Easy for wifey to clean!!!! (HH now on!)

Another vote here for Corelle - absolutely worth every penny. I also wrapped the wire plate rack with spiral cable wrap. It took a couple of hours work but now the plates don't clang and rattle about :-)

And another. Bought ours at the Manchester show a few years ago and it is just like the real stuff. Having used melamine for years previously I was amazed it was so good. We’ve eaten curry off the plates, plus a variety of other things with strongly coloured sauces and it washes just like the plates at home without staining.

Just a point about Melamine and that is don't put it in the microwave (unless you want it to bubble all over).

We have had our Melamine since 1977 and apart from cups, which stain badly over time, the plates and bowls still look good.

We bought 2 mugs, plates, bowls in a microwave-safe plastic from Winfield's camping store just for use in the microwave, that was until the microwave overheated and so we haven't used them for ages. Our melamine isn't quite as old as yours but like yours ,apart from mugs, still looks good. I bought a bulk lot of melamine mugs off eBay, 24 of them for £5, so replace them every couple of years once the staining gets too bad.

Our melamine crockery came second hand with the van and apart from the mugs is still fine. I made the mistake of soaking the stained mugs overnight in a strong solution of bleach, which removed (most) of the staining, but now the mugs have a noticeable taste of bleach, which doesn't seem to be wearing off.

We'll, we have a different take. We use the white fluted edge plates available widely in French hypermarkets. I think it is made by Duralex so actually tempered white glass but it's brilliant. Been tempted by Corelle though because of the nice patterns.
