Problems with using Kilrock Descalene Descale Empty Problems with using Kilrock Descalene Descale

Hi all, I did a descale of the freshwater tank and Truma heater recently (last month) following recommendations and instructions on the forum. Everything went perfectly as instructed. After the procedure the whole system was then flushed thoroughly using a full tank of freshwater, using the new Shurflo pump to flush through the bathroom and kitchen taps, water then filling waste tank to clean and finally both tanks were drained ready for going away. This morning I noticed green gunge deposits on the bathroom and kitchen cream worktops near and around the taps. They are both leaking water! It seems that the tap seals have been compromised in some way! Hopefully no other damage, but who knows at the moment!

Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions as to how this has happened and how far the problem could extend round the system?

Update! I have just removed the Whale ceramic cartridge valve inserts from both leaking taps. The o rings are perfect, however the cartridges were not fixed firmly, the brass nuts were only finger tight. I have tightened them without over tightening and I am running water through them. All ok at the moment. The descaler must have dislodged some crud in the valves and with the tightening of the large brass nuts this has sorted them hopefully. I will test them thoroughly, if any probs I will purchase three new cartridges online for all taps including the shower. They are all different sizes and have part nos and dates on them. One valve goes back to 2004!

Of course the original green stuff was from the copper pipe inserts in the brass body of the taps!

Glad you're sorted as I always see the descaler in Aldi and think to myself I must get some and glad to hear it hasn't affected the system.

Hi Pete, glad you're sorted but could I ask why you felt the need to descale your system? My van is ten years older than yours and I've never descaled and I know the single previous owner never did either. So my van is over 13 years old and has never had anything but water and the odd purification tablet through the system, everything works perfectly so I'm inclined to leave well alone.

Thanks Paul, I was a little concerned initially, but all seems ok. I have got a full tank of freshwater onboard now and I will give it regular flushes with warm and hot water to test it. Finger crossed all ok.

It just show you need to be a bit handy, though the only correct size
Allan key for the top of the tap was from my cycle tool kit. I have just ordered a new set of 30 imperial and metric to keep in the van for such emergencies!

Hi Al, I decided to descale the system as we were in Northern Spain and Portugal for 6 weeks a while back and I had read reports of severe hard water in those areas, so I thought I would give it a treat.

I know what you are saying, but I was also concerned with Truma heating elements being compromised and they are expensive to replace.

I bought a set of Allen keys, torx bits, star bits and screwdriver bits from Lidl, all fitted in a 3" circular tub complete with handle to leave in the van 'just in case'.

Another Update!

The two Whale taps are leaking once again! Kilrock Descalene to blame? Will be contacting AS tomorrow for advice and to purchase new Whale ceramic cartridge valves!

Any thoughts welcome
