Nuevo 2 2010 - water pool at front of awning Empty Nuevo 2 2010 - water pool at front of awning

Post by andy_pennington Fri Jun 19, 2020 3:07 pm

First time and new van owner here, so apologies if I mess up on etiquette
I've got a Nuevo 2 2010 with a fitted awning - I don't know the make.
Every time it rains, a rather deep puddle of water sits inside the awning enclosure, towards the front of the awning. This seems to be due to the body sloping slightly to the front, but also because of an aluminium strip bonded to the roof near where the awning sits.

So, my question - is this normal?
When I move off after rain there's an almighty slosh of water comes down the side of the van.
Is there a drain hole that should be taking this water away somewhere.?
I'm a bit concerned that a puddle sat in the awning enclosure is not such a great thing to have for long periods. It is probably 3cm deep at the front, tailing off to nothing at the end of the alu strip where it presumably drains away.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks!

That's normal in my experience.

I had this problem with an externally mounted awning on a Topaz.
A carefully placed and even more carefully drilled 10mm drain  hole cured the problem.

Water does pool on the roof.  Also an amazing smou t can collect I side the decorative eyebrow that runs round a I've the cab with Autosleeper on it. Both pour off when you move.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]normal? to have standing water on a MH roof? certainly not normal with my last two vans.

why would a design allow water to pool on a roof, especially in an industry where water can be the biggest enemy and some owners leave vans parked (complete with upper swimming pool) for months on end??

surely a sensible design would be to allow water to drain immediately from the roof meaning any parked van has a dry roof?

ours has a completely flat roof with gentle convex profiles at the edges which eases water away and is guided by two shallow edging uprights which lead it to the front or the rear, depending on which is the lower...

result, roof always clear of water....

Agreed, though our Hymer had a similar but lesser problem. The Muscle of 2009 to 20q2 had a fairly complex roof with side "rails" which made provision for roof bars a d also spoilers in front of the roof lights, all of which trap water, depending on the particular level (or lack thereof)of the van. The only downside is algae growth as the area is seamless fibre glass moulding. Even the rooflights are slightly raised. The eyebrow is an oddity. It deliberately is not sealed to the main mouldings which I think have a joint under the eyebrow I. Until I realised the consequences I used to park long term fairly steeply nose up but then the amount of water shed on moving the van made me concerned that the joint under the eyebrow could be submerged long term which might have dire consequences if it froze in winter. Not the best of designs.
But I have come across some grossly dissatisfied Carthago owners which are not always regarded as of the quality that might be expected at the price.
As with any product - know the potential weaknesses and monitor them. NOTHING is perfect.

My point wasn't to start a tit for tat over brands, merely to suggest a roof that shed water is (IMO) a lot better then one the retains it in pools.

At last you explained where the water comes from when we set off for a drive after some rain.

I've never seen it as a problem as the water stays outside the  van and lets me use the wipers to clean the windows without needing the washers!

I did not disagree wiith your sentiments. I was merely saying that no brand is perfect. One of the benefits of a forum is that it helps us all to learn of the potential problems that may occur on our van's and avoid them becoming significant issues.
PS not sure how Nuevos in my previous post got changed to Muscles wave

Doesn't address what that pooling water is doing to the roof joints when the van is lying idle for long periods.
Far better for it not to pool in the first place?

We AS owners don't have roof joints, it's a single grp moulding on top.

Thanks all for responding. I've decided I'll try a couple of railway sleeper height ramps to see if that allows proper drainage.
And buy a cover for the winter... (after making sure its all dry first!)

That will open another can of worms Andy.

There are quite conflicting views about the dubious pro's and definite con's of covers . . . as you are about to discover.
