Thanks, Frederic. The username sent to me for the ASOC members’ area contained a space, like “username 8”. I successfully logged in after deleting that space.

I received a helpful email from ASOC Publications early this morning, confirming the necessary absence of a space in the username as originally given to me.
Perhaps they're doing likewise to all who've been sent an incorrect username.
All now well.
