Re: Solar controller
On the EC328 it's very easy - there is a dedicated 4-way connector for it on the underside - it's the only 4-way connector on the main control unit. You don't even need to open the main unit up.
Sargent sell an appropriate cable - you can buy it directly from their website.

Re: Solar controller
The socket circled in blue pins 1 and 3 are connected to the input of the solar controller shown in your picture.

Re: Solar controller
Yes, as Roopert suggest its easiest done via the Sargent cable https://sargentltd.co.uk/shop/product/solar-connecting-lead-for-ec325-ec328-systems-included-with-sargent-solar-panels/121

Do you mean that there is already a plug in the 4-way socket? I don't think this is very unusual on recent vans with no solar panel. As far as I can tell, the loom kit that Sargent supply to A/S is a general-purpose one which includes the solar cable, so in some cases A/S just fit it anyway, and leave it unconnected somewhere.

Re: Solar controller
The black connectors on one end of the interface cable would mate with a solar panel supplied by Sargent. For another type of panel you would cut them off and connect the panel cable to the lead cable with an in line connector.
Based in Bristol you might consider Vanbitz doing an installation for you https://vanbitz.com/

Hi Peter in your first picture the 10 pin white connector next to the orange cable is at the back of the boiler hanging loose, is it meant to be connected and what is it for

Just out of interest has anyone swept the original, PWM for a MPPT controller? .

The solar controller pictured in the OP is an excellent (and quite expensive) unit, it kept both my batteries fully charged on the drive all year with an 80W panel and did all I need when on rallies and aires without EHU.

Yes, I did several years ago, without any significant changes to the wiring.

Re: Solar controller
I did a couple of years ago, the original controller wasn't working so i replaced it for a Victron 75/15 MPPT controller and Vanbitz battery master.Molly3 wrote:Just out of interest has anyone swept the original, PWM for a MPPT controller? .
If you remove the old controller you'll find you can install both of the new components in its place with tiewraps. I've drilled a couple of 6mm holes in ther cover of the 328 to enable me to see the charging lights.
The advantage of the bluetooth controller is that you can see exactly what's happening with the solar and battery on your phone.

Re: Solar controller
I have only ever used pwm controller on five vans now.
Several reasons
Easy to get dual battery ones, which I always want.
Cheaper
Reliable with one exception, not still sure that was the controller fault.
Now before everyone starts on about getting a better output from the panels with mppt, this is true. However as my batteries are invariably fully charged by, say, noon, the panel then spends the rest of the daylight doing nothing unless we're using power. Had it been mppt, the batteries would be full say, 11am then the panel spend rest of day doing nothing!
I rely on simplicity and avoiding any Sargent connection at all!

Re: Solar controller
I fitted a dual MPPT Ian as I’m sure you are aware and don’t regret it, the battery is indeed fully charged in spring/summer/autumn by 11 in the morning as you mention.
The reason for my post though is something that has always bothered me and something you also mention.
Is there actually something we can do with all this wasted energy whether MPPT or PWM

Re: Solar controller
I had an Eddi Solar Diverter fitted in the new solar installation in our house. This takes excess power from the panels (once the house battery is charged) and sends it to the hot water immersion heater. I guess you could in theory do the same with a Truma and use any excess for hot water and heating In our house installation we used no gas to heat hot water during the summer and through until late October.
As an add-on to our solar installation this unit (which handles 10kw of solar panels) cost about £500.00. It may be that there is an inexpensive low output diverter on the market but I have not looked. I guess it would need to run through an inverter though.
