Hi could you please tell us what year they stopped making the Topaz?
We already have a Trophy and the size is ideal for us we are looking to upgrade to a more up to date version.

I  think 2016 was the last year it was produced in any quantity, after that only to order.

I'm no vw expert but I believe  the t6 started production  by vw in 2012. There is a 2013 topaz on eBay  but I think its a t5 , its £39k, they certainly  hold their value..
There's also a 2010 on eBay for only £1k less.

At present the availability of used motorhomes, especially pre 2018, is dire.

As an example Autotrader has just one Symbol (one of their highest volume models) for sale between 2007 and 2017. That's 10 years and just one van available. Topaz production was always lower than Symbols so the possibility of finding exactly what you require are probably close to zero.

Supply may improve when restrictions relax as owners trade in their vans, but don't hold your breath.

That sounds about right Paul because it normally took A/S a year to clear previous model base vehicle stock. So I'd guess T6's came in some time in 2013. My feeling is that production numbers for VW based A/S vehicles was relatively low from 2010 onwards.

As Paul says, you'll have to react and move quickly if you see a Topaz that is that recent. They made very few in the last years and dealers are charging ludicrous prices for them (sometimes not much less than the original price would have been 5 years earlier).

The T6 is a later model than has been suggested here though. It wasn't available in the UK in any significant numbers before 2016, though production for buyers elsewhere in Europe may have started the previous year.

One suggestion though: don't concentrate too much on mileage. Everyone wants a low mileage example, so you'll be up against everyone else looking for one. The mechanical parts of a T5 or T6 should be in great condition at 100,000 miles and the engines should do 400,000 if maintained properly. IMO, condition and history are more important than mileage.

Never forget that motorhomes are built on vans that are designed to do high mileages in a short time. Motorhomes do the exact opposite, low mileages over many years. Low mileage can be detrimental to a van.

We would also consider a T5 it's my husband that wants to go as up to date as possible it's a pity they dont make another small model with the shower room space is a problem for us as we need to fit it under the carport.

From what I can glean via Google the Topaz is approximately 5.3m long, 2.7m high and 2.1m wide (all figures rounded).

The only current Auto-Sleeper that comes near is the Symbol which has a shower room and is 5.4m long (around 4ins longer), 2.6m high (so about 4ins lower) and 2.3m wide (about 8ins wider).

Turning those dimensions into a cube, the Topaz has a volume of 30 cubic metres and the Symbol is 32 cubic metres, so a 7% overall increase in space occupied. The Topaz and Symbol lounge layout are the same but you get around an extra 8ins of bed length if you use a Symbol set up as a double. The kitchen on the Symbol is much wider and presumably doesn't involve so much turning around. The Symbol shower room doesn't have an integral wardrobe as it is out in the dry part of the van.

If you want an auto box, the current boxes fitted by Fiat to the Ducato base vehicle are on a par with VW's and much better than those fitted until relatively recently.

One has to assume that Auto-Sleeper gradually pulled out of converting Transporters because the base vehicle became too expensive for them to convert and for their customers to buy, at a price that made A/S sufficient margin. There presumably comes a point where reduced sales volume makes it not worthwhile featuring a model in the range.

I had a 2012 T5 which gave me no problems at all in 5 years of ownership from new. Speaking to a couple of T6 owners last year, they had been blighted by so called ‘improvements’ over the old model.
Obviously 2 vans is not a big sample and I’m sure there are many happy T6 owners. I suppose my point being that a newer model doesn’t always mean it’s better!
Many A/S owners will agree with this I’m sure with some of the problems reported on recent builds!

Derby were asking £48k for that van.

The average asking price for all 14 2015 Auto-Sleepers on Autotrader is £46,000 and for £48k there is a 2015 automatic Broadway FB coachbuilt advertised there.

There are no 2015 Symbols on A/T, the nearest is an automatic 2017 model for £53k, from Marquis, so probably over priced.

We really want to stay with vw as we normally go to the weekend shows just a pity such a limited choice with their models.
We were looking at the gatscombe and club man but can only see them on T4 chassis and we want to update to at least T5 chassis otherwise we may as well keep the trophy.
Cant believe the prices though.

At an educated guess I'd say, that if there was a 2015 Symbol advertised, it would be for about £40k and with a similar age Topaz selling around £48k by Derby it sort of demonstrates the premium people are prepared to pay for a much narrower van with an awkward, tiny kitchen and a VW emblem on the front.

On that basis and bearing in mind the Marquis price for their Symbol, if there were such a thing as a 2017 Topaz then I could see it being priced at around £60k by a dealer. Silly money, but scarcity and high demand will do that. For that price you can buy a brand new Symbol and not a 4 year old Topaz.

As one who has had a Topaz and knows them, how about a Bilbo Lezan
https://www.bilbos.com/new-used-stock/vw-t5-lezan-po5222/
not an A/S but the build quality is good (better) and can be built to order.
A/S build quality has been to a price since the mid 2000's  (we speak from 30 yrs of experience) so perhaps worth a look?

Other alternatives are the Autohaus Camelot that has a proper Thetty on board but no shower/washbasin, like the Lezan. The Leisuredrive Vivante is similar too. If wanting to go VW Crafter rather than VW Transporter there's the Autohaus Crafter Grandi X with a full wet room.
