Anyone noticed a like and dislike button on each post this morning?

I've just tried it.

Like Paulmold’s post for giving me information but dislike the idea that we are effectively rating each post if we use the buttons. I’d much prefer a simple Thanks button.

I 'disliked' a post this morning and it doesn't show 'who' disliked it so at least it's anonymous.

Not any longer Paul. ***

Now I really don't like it!!

It will put off some of our more sensitive members from posting their opinions, and will become a tool for the (mercifully few) bullies we have on here!

Very bad idea in my opinion, and I don't care how many dislikes this post gets . . . but it would really bother some of our members!!

EDIT. *** See my reply to Paul, a few posts below.

Personally I’m not a fan of these buttons (although I’ve just ‘liked’ a couple of posts).
I see that liking a post is not anonymous compared to dislike as mentioned by Paul above.

Edit....posted before seeing Gromits post

Don't take it personally, but I'll dislike your previous post to check the functions.  up!

If you like or dislike a post, then change your mind, you can swap your opinion by toggling the buttons. Will this feature be time bombed though, like editing??

You can also cancel a like or dislike by hitting the button a second time.

Interestingly, you can also like your own post (see here <<<). Can I have that as a default please!  lol4

Dbvwt's post shows 1 dislike and that's anonymous and the post I disliked still shows as anonymous, so I'm confused Dave.

I didn't think this through properly before my first post - I do think a Like button is a good idea in that you can indicate that you have seen and appreciate the post without typing but I also understand the issues that could emerge from use of the dislike button.

I don't know if Admin has an option to disable either or both or whether they are now a default feature of the forum platform?

I've also pondered some more Peter.

I'm not even sure about that. (highlighted above)

If someone "likes" a post that is either controversial or critical of another member, they may well become a target. Such victimisation happens a lot on other forums, and is not entirely unknown on here!

I would much prefer both to be anonymous, assuming we need both? I'm still not sure we need a "dislike" button.

I agree with quilter, I'd much rather see a Thanks button.

Unfortunately, whilst we are all cooped up indoors, unable to get our beloved vans out and about onto sites, there has been an even greater number of Off-Topic threads than usual, with subjects on which there are always going to be two polarised opinions. I try to avoid getting involved in those, tempting as it is, as it's really a waste of time and energy since the likelihood of changing someone's deeply held opinion is generally zero, so it just descends into an argument. I'm sure this is off-putting to others, particularly new members who may feel the forum is not as friendly as we claim it to be.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm all for free speech, and will defend the rights of those with opposing views from mine to express them, but preferably on an appropriate platform.

I come on here to learn from others about subjects relating to using my AutoSleeper and sometimes to share my own experiences if it helps. For that, a Thanks button is appropriate.

Adding Like/Dislike buttons will simply further polarise opinion among opposing cliques  with strongly held views and as has been said may discourage some (the silent majority?), from contributing.

Whilst some off-topic light-hearted banter threads may help cheer us up, particularly at the moment, political arguments won't.

Let's not forget the primary objective of this forum is to share experiences with other AS owners in the spirit of friendly helpfulness.

Could it be like the peculiar Thank button which I have never understood or made to work ?

Perhaps the Dislike button shows you ( ie the person who has disliked the post) that you have disliked it for only a limited time and only on the platform you are using, before disappearing . That way you won’t try to dislike it twice.

What is meant by Dislike anyway ? If someone disagrees with my post then I hope they will relpy and tell me why. Do they dislike all the post or only a bit of it ?

Oh dear a step backwards I  believe. While some will use it at every opportunity to stroke their friends ego others will use it to put the boot into anyone they dont agree with or have a personal grudge against. It was perfectly possible to show appreciation by PM someone who has gone out of their way to help. A nice personal  message to show thanks.  A sad unneccesary addition I fear likely to cause resentment  and unrest  IMHO.

I've just had a look on another forum that uses the same forum host as this one and that also has the like/dislike buttons which it didn't have before. So it would appear to be a default feature that Admin may have no control over.

It seems that they use colour coding to show you which posts you have liked and disliked - so you get a little green thumbs up at the top left of the Like button if you've pressed it, and a little red thumbs down on the Dislike button if that's what you pressed.

However, what I see on my browser (Firefox)  may not be the same as anyone else - for months now I don't see any Avatars or any of the "smileys". Not sure why.

And yes - you can Dislike your own posts!
