1988 Autosleeper Magazine

Post by DaveyP2004 on Wed Nov 27, 2013 2:38 pm

Came across this 1988 Autosleeper magazine and thought it may be of interest to some on here:

1988 Autosleeper Magazine featuring VW T25 Autosleeper VX50, Autosleeper VT20 and Autosleeper VHT, Ford Frisky, Ford Legend, Ford Flair, Renault RV50, Renault RV50, Renault Rapport, Renault RCX, Talbot Sportsman SL, Talbot Rambler and Talbot Talisman

If anyone has any more of these magazines from 80's or 90s please send me a copy and I will add it to my website for all to see.

Cheers,
Dave

For some reason I can't read it - the resolution is wrong to be able to make out any of the small font text other than the "footer" that you appear to have insterted into the file, and I get a warning when opening the file that it "may not display properly".

I should add that I don't use Adobe's PDF reader, as I don't use Windows, but the open source reader that I use seems to read everything else Ok.

Hi Mojo,

I am sorry if it doesn't work with your open source reader? If you tell me what it is called I will do some tests to see if I can make it readable.

Actually, it seems as though it's the PDF plugin for Firefox 24.0 for Linux Mint, but if I download it and open it with Mint's Document Reader it displays Ok, so it's probably just a glitch - Firefox gets updated so often at the moment that it's not worth trying to chase down every quirk - there will probably be a new version out in a few weeks time!

Must admit there are a few old favourites there - I've owned 3 of the models shown, though not quite in the versions at that date (e.g. we had a Frisky before they were called that).

Wonderful!  It must have been that which persuaded us to buy our first motorhome in 1988 - a new AutoSleeper VHT on the VW chassis. We had it for 10 years, and it surpassed the write-up! The side sliding door and the upper chicken-coop bed meant that its carrying capacity as a van was immense: moved all my son's paraphernalia to France for his year abroad; and 2 single beds and 3 mattresses to London when daughter was a student - with one mattress resting on head restraint above my head!  A great motorhome in its day.  Mind you, the Clubman which succeeded it, with hot water and a bathroom, was a giant leap forward!

Very grateful to see the brochure again.  Thanks, DaveyP2004

What an interesting read, I wonder how many of those 1988 vans are still on the road today? It was interesting to note that the Fiat Legend advert boasted of rust protection and longevity of its smooth engines. From my memory of Fiat van's in the late 80s a bit of an exaggeration perhaps!  hugegrins hugegrins

Thanks for finding and posting the mag. Nice to be reminded our first ever A/S purchase; the Commer. Fantastic little camper - it was old when we bought it in the 80s but served the needs of our family of four. In camp sites and car parks on our first visit to Germany, we got into several conversations with German men, who seemed very interested in the base vehicle. Some thought it was a VW from a distance - my husband was in his element. Happy days.

Since posting I also managed to get hold of the 1986/87 Autosleeper Magazine.
You can download it here:

I assume that in 1988 it would have been the younger generations of the Grantham family that had the Autosleeper parked in the grounds of Downton Abbey . . .

Just the sort of thing we absolutely love, especially the adverts.

Can I use some of these for the Transit 50th this year to show the vehicle through the years ?  Quite happy to put a note that I have found them through your site.

I aim to put a folder together to have on show at Gaydon in August and these along with some of the bits from your site will make fascinating reading.

Found our Frisky sales brochure and some other Ford campervans which I am going to scan and happy to share with others.

Dave,
May I ask what your source is ? I'm collecting them at the moment (1991, 1995, 1998 and 1999) but keep getting shot down on 'fleabay' !
I've also gathered up some old brochures as well.

Roli,
I've also got several AS magazines and brochures up to 1999, some scanned, some not yet.

Can we have a section on the forum where such material can be located in one place for members to access ? (and some uploading instructions for us non-techies)

Thanks from me as well. The 1991 30th anniv edition is of particular interest as our Talisman GL is a 1992 and is pretty well identical to the one in the mag.

Glad they're going down well, there's a 1999 40 page magazine to scan in which covers Peugeot, Ford, VW and Mercedes chassis based models.
Should be ready by the end of the week.

Terry up!
