Who knows their noses????

Post by Wingrider8368 on Wed Nov 20, 2013 10:40 am

I am following a thread on another forum with great interest, with reference to improving head light output.  They are talking about long and short noses on Volkswagen T4s.  Now as some of you know, I am hoping to collect a Clubman GL, 1994 reg, 2.4, 5 cyl diesel soon and I was wondering if someone could tell me if it has a long or short nose.
Many thanks in anticipation
Ken. allthumbz

Short nose - the long nose version didn't come in until '96.

Thanks Mojo, I just knew that somebody could tell me.  I felt that it probably was but being new to the game and having nothing to compare against, I was a bit stuck.
Thanks again,
KR
Ken

Hi Ken
T4 headlight output is certainly a really week point. One of the easiest mods to do is to bypass the existing VW wiring, to make sure there is no, (or very little), voltage drop right at the headlight bulbs. This is one of the best kits on the market to do this:-
 http://www.xtremevan.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=5041&oscsid=2p4rbtn69p2dvrtdui0g4pokc1

and its suitable for all T4s.

Hope this is of some use.

Regards

I have found a similar thing on the vwt4forum by
www.travel volts.com.
Your one would be a bit cheaper, do you think there is a difference in quality, use or results.
Thanks for your help
Ken

Ps sorry about the blue background, I cannot get rid of it at the moment.

The xtremevan wiring has easy access to relays and fuses. It's probably more difficult to install as you have to mount the relay block on the bulkhead, (next to the A/S split charge unit), but IMO its a far superior design.

Agreed - I looked at the Travelvolts upgraded loom for the T5 and wasn't that impressed with what appear to be relays wrapped in heatshrink rather than mounted up somewhere accessible.

It seems that the second generation T5 is less in need of a wiring upgrade so I didn't take it further, but I did change the bulbs to Osram Nightbreakers, and these made a significant improvement on their own. I fitted one side only to start with so I could compare with the original almost brand new VW fitted bulbs, and they are both brighter and whiter - definitely worth doing for around a tenner outlay.

Mojo
Although kits are available for the T5, its not worth the money, The standard T5 set up doesn't suffer in the same way the T4 does. Having had both van types I can assure you the T5's headlights are vastly superior. I can only dream to get that much light out of my T4  smile!

Hi Hoopman & Mojo
Thanks for coming back with your thoughts, I reckon that the Xtremevan upgrade will have to be an early mod.
I'm used to modern lights on cars and don't think I would like to spend to much time back in the darkness.
Ttfn until the next question
Ken
