Removing brown sticky tape residue from wood

Post by RichardB on Tue Sep 10, 2013 9:00 pm

Hi all
Quick questions - had a google for the first but nothing that I found works

Previous owner had put two pieces for 10mm dowel (each 12" long) around the top of a cabinet presumably to stop things falling off - however they had fasten them in place by covering them in brown parcel tape, across the length of them and then over and down the sites of the cabinets.   Have removed them but the brown tape has left a slightly sticky residue all over the wooden top and sides.
Tried to heat it slightly to scrap off and also tried hot soapy water, wd40 and some computer foam cleaner - nothing will shift it.
Any ideas what else I can try apart from sandpaper and varnish?

thanks
Richard

Hi there,

I would start with warm water.

If that didn't work then it probably requires an oil or alcohol based solvent so I would try WD40 (as it seems to work as a solvent for most things) and then French cologne (to see if the 60% alcohol worked).

If none of these solvents work then the last resort would be acetone.

If that didn't work I would resort to stainless steel scrubbing pads!!tap_fingers tap_fingers

Hope this helps.allthumbz

Best regards,

The easiest and safest way, does not damage wood or anything else for that matter, is a product called the Sticky Stuff Remover , I bought my first lot from Lakeland years ago, Aldi have it in as well,  I always keep some, in the kitchen, craft room caravan and motor home, always handy, removes labels,  cleans sticky scissors as well, it is not expensive and lasts ages. I paid about £2.49

Thanks for your help.
Got some sticky Stuff Remover gel - sprayed it on, waited 5 minutes, quick scrape with an old bank card and it just floated off.
Got all the wardrobe done and some stuff on the back windows...I would recommend this to everyone!

Well done, I didn`t know that they did it in a spray bottle, learn something everyday, the ones I have is a gel in a plastic container, not spray though,  perhaps that is why it was dearer.

I haven't commented because others did.

I only asked specifically because a few years ago there were various products about for caravans which after a period of time after use the plastic widows degraded
