Road Tax rip off

Post by kenjones on Sat May 28, 2011 10:02 am

A question has been asked on another forum about how much road tax motorhome owners pay. It does appear that the amount varies according to how your vehicle is registered.
My 2004 Topaz 2.5 tdi is shown as a Diesel Car and currently taxed at £245 pa.
There is a suggestion that if the conversion was carried out before the first registration it should be in a different (lower) tax band.
I understand from Autosleepers that ALL of thier vehicles are supplied to dealers unregistered.
A phone call to Swansea proved a complete waste of time as they say a tax band can't be changed, this is not true.
How much Road Tax do you pay and has anyone managed to get the class reviewed?

Ken,
My van is 2004 and has a 2 litre HDI diesel engine. It is registered as body type "motor caravan" and taxation class "PLG"
I paid £205 road tax at the end of December for 12 months.

Surely your van should be classed as a motor caravan and tax class PLG as mine is. I seem to remember some dicussion about this on another forum some time ago. I thought the advice was to get the registration details changed/corrected but I cannot remember any outcome.

Hi Ken

Just checked our paperwork for our Trident 2.4D which was supplied & registered by Marquis on or around 5th May 2001.
Ours is also taxation class: "Diesel car" and like you we also paid £245.00

I paid the same for my 2lt petrol as it's prior to 2001 when it all changed to be based on emissions.

Our 2008 reg Ford/Windsor 2.4td was £205 PLG in March this year. I think the varying levels of tax are related to engine emmision levels, so the newer engines are lower levels

Ken
My van appears to be similar to yours - same colour too.
It's the 2.5 turbo diesel (5 cylinder) motor and was first registered in Sept 2004.
I paid £215 road tax when I last renewed in September 2011.
The taxation class in my log-book (V5C) is shown as Private/Light Goods (PLG) and the body type as Motor Caravan.
I hope this helps.
Dave

P.S. I know this is a long shot but if your upholstery is the same as mine, I wonder if you have any spare material?. (I'm looking for about a metre and it's known as Fellina Grey - although it's a bluish colour I reckon.

I taxed my A/S Warwick 1st November for 6 months at £126-50, used it for a week then decided to put it away for the winter so put it on SORN 19th Nov.(same month). According to the DVLA site it clearly states a FULL refund of any remaining full months tax would be repaid. I was expecting 5x6ths of my £126-50, oh no, I got 5x6ths of my tax less the 10per cent surcharge.
Absolute rip off not only have they gained part month of November but the surcharge charge.
I can find nothing on their site relating to this non refundable charge, they are a law unto themselves.
So its 12 months in future, no surcharge on that.

As far as I can remember, it has always been the case that a 6 month tax refund would be less the surcharge.

Our Nuevo PLG cost £225 in Dec 2013, it is Euro 5 but I doubt that makes any difference                                    REGARDS   Paul

Re: Road Tax rip off

Considering the way in which certain councils are legislating against motorhomes (motorcaravans on the TRO) surely it is now not necessarily in our best interests to ensure that our vans are registered as motorcaravans.
This 'wrongly registered' issue is a perennial one;  yet there has never been a report of any action being taken against an owner driving as an ordinary PLG.
Is there actually a lawful requirement to register our motorcaravans as such - if they meet the minimum standards?
Many self-build owners find themselves in a non-motorcaravan situation without any ongoing difficulty.

You would of course have to live with lower speed limits if not classified as body type "Motor Caravan" - though that wouldn't be an issue for me.
