OXFORD A34 AREA LATE STOP

Post by DougC on Mon Nov 05, 2012 10:20 pm

Hi we are about to take our first adventure in our new van lets_dance down to visit family in Portsmouth area ..... but here's the catch.

My wife won't be finishing work until 20:00 on the Friday night and with our camper being built for comfort not for speed we were thinking of stopping off in the Oxford A34 trunk road area...

the question are...

Does anyone know of either a site that will allow us to roll up at probably 23:00 at night just for one night or is there a "safe" parking alternative like a truckstop or layby in that area that anyones used...

as an ex-white van man you can imagine where I've kipped before but the prettier half of my relationship would prefer not to be fending of oiks in the middle of the night think_smiley_46 ........ apart from me that is best_friends

Stop over a34

Post by scovell001 on Thu Nov 08, 2012 8:56 am

Hi

We stopped over at heyford leys camping park last week just off a34, we arrived at 10pm as a stop over. We did ring the site in advance , they advised the late arrival was not a problem. Easy enough to find with easy access to the site with no gates or barriers to worry about, paid online which then allowed us to arrive and and simply hook up on the night smile! we never saw or spoke to anyone!

We recently stopped at Oxford services, £8.00 for 24 hours, park at the side of services, not by the hotel, very quiet night, with 24 hour security (so don't forget to pay on arrival) Parking machine by the building, if no change, there is a change machine by the fruit machines just inside the building, changes notes to required coins.

You have to put your reg number into the machine, normally, I would avoid these places, but this was a good one, and reasonably priced.

Abingdon

Post by ubuntu1 on Fri Nov 16, 2012 6:19 pm

I have used Abingdon a couple of times. Its just a car park and will have a number of HGV's there and usually a m/h or two. Its lit and next to a normal public car park. I use it on the way to the ferry in Portsmouth as it breaks my journey nicely. We usually get there about 10pm and go straight to bed. By the time we rise in the morning all of the HGV's have gone and Abingdon is coming to life.

Winter wonderland

Post by DougC on Fri Dec 28, 2012 10:07 pm

sorry for delay in feedback ...work and the treadmill of life caught up confused0

Friday 30th November ...... we ended up setting off a lot earlier than we thought and arrived at the site about 4 in the afternoon.

We were met by the owners wife as we arrived and she took us to the reserved pitch with every help possible ..... she was even going to connect mains lead for us big thumbs up

The site was small with well paved access roads and really clean facilities with quite a few of the hard standing pitches occupied. The main field was a really nice tree lined space and even after all the rain upto that date had already drained away.

Unfortunately there didn't seem to be many facilities around as the RAF base has been closed for some years and half the local buildings seemed empty.

For the first night out you can't really beat the test of -4c confused0 winks scratch head nearly had to snap the dog off the grass lol4

will post some pictures over the weekend
