Reception tuning Empty Reception tuning

Post by Tommy-Darcy Fri Jun 22, 2012 10:15 am

It amazes me just how many folks do not realise that TV's have to be retuned whenever the vehicle has moved from one destination to another. We have to endure a barrage of abuse regarding our plug in TV points with comments like "It was working fine before we left home" or "It was working last time we used it last year" etc.

I am always the one who gets summoned to fix these customer issues, and the subsequent abuse whilst I am in the process of retuning their TV's with very little in the way of thanks when mission completed and they have 144+ channels to chose from. Folks do not like to admit that they are in the wrong....................no matter how obvious it is!!! Whistle1

An example which occurred yesterday.

Chap came in complaining. He had attempted a re-tune, getting nothing but a screen message "No signal ensure cable connected". Off I toddled with him, listening to him telling me that our plugs were rusted up (they are oiled regularly to ensure this does not happen).

Upon investigation I noticed that the rats nest of TV cabling (about 10mtrs) was actually 2 separate lengths with one connector on each. He thought that it was one length. We lent him one of our cables (£5 refundable deposit) and behold problem solved.

Reaction; chap said sternly "You should lend these cables free of charge when you know you have connection problems on your site"..... tap_fingers

Reception tuning Empty tV signal

Post by murph Sat Jun 23, 2012 4:56 pm

Hi Terry,
We dont normally use large sites, in ten years I think we have stayed on less than ten of them. After staying on one in Southern Ireland (years ago)for 1 night my wife said, do you realise we have just paid 15 euro to fill the water tank. but I can imagine with regard to TV that those who do use them would expect full service, and many would not be prepared to admit that they are at fault, or have insufficient knowledge to sort out their problem.
Most would not know that different transmitters transmit on different frequencies and there are over a thousand transmitters in Britain and therfore require retuning almost every time they change site.
May I suggest that you get a copy of the TV viewers guide which gives all the transmitters and thier frequencies listed as a help to in quelling arguments.

Murph, most of those campers I assist are "experienced campers", which is why it amazes me that they do not know how to re-tune, or that they have to re-tune. Once I have sorted out the initial problem whether it be the cable or how to re-tune, I always then go through the re-tune/installation/ set-up sequence step by step so that they are confident enough to be able to go through the process at their next port of call. I think giving them a print out of station frequencies will only confuse them. Getting them to the "Auto scan" step by using the handset is usually sufficient.

Thanks for the suggestion though up!

Talking of handsets/remotes I can honestly say that since March and the many TV issues I have sorted I have not come across 2 of the same layout, strange confused3

Hi Ian,
I didnt mean give them a printout, just showing them how many different frequencies there are should be sufficient, but I must admit that you can't account for human stupidity.
