2001 Symbol for sale

Post by catperson on Sat Sep 29, 2018 11:42 am

Very reluctant sale of my 2001 AS Symbol.  'George' has done about 74,000 miles, a 2l engine and is petrol. He has many good points, including his exceptionally nice interior.  However, I don't  have the knowledge for DIY maintenance and I've lost faith in garages (it's been a very stressful year...) .  Ultimately though, the big problem is that my dog developed a travel phobia a few years ago and no amount of behavioural training or medications can fix it so my travelling days are severely limited :(

George has got  some crunchy gears at the moment.  He's ok to drive now but the gearbox is bound to need work before a long trip next summer and this is reflected in the price of £11,000. My thinking is that someone might like to buy him, drive him over winter and then get the gear box repaired closer to home, so that the buyer gets the new warranty with a local garage.  If there's no interest, I will keep him until Spring and get the work done in meantime but then I'd be looking for more for him so maybe a chance to buy earlier and get yourself a better deal?

Please DM with any questions.

ETA I'm in the Bristol area

Your gearbox problem

Post by Birdy123 on Sun Oct 21, 2018 8:18 am

Hi, I had the same problems with the gearbox on my 1999 symbol, also petrol. I had it replaced with a recon gearbox and at same time renewed the clutch, this was done in Bristol (we live in Oxford) by Gloucester road gearboxes in Bristol. It cost just under £2000.00 all in and was done the same day.
Its a fair bit of money but it will give you an up on selling your symbol..hope this is of help.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm afraid I had a very bad experience with Gloucester Road gearboxes - http://www.autosleeper-ownersforum.com/t27184-gearbox-problems

Sincerely hope you don't have anything similar. All the best

Ohh Dear.....now reading these posts has got me worried...being a novice to campervans, i went with a recommendation i once read on this site somewhere..now i am concerned..feel that with every gear change i do in the future will have to be a kid glove and nervous change at that as buying this van and having the works done has cost me most of my pension savings....so if anything happens to gearbox in near future i am literally up the creek!!  I do hope that you find a solution and it turns out to be a happy one

Hi,
From bitter experience at one time I had stiff and crunchy gear changes on my 2001 petrol symbol after a service at a Peugeot garage. To cut a long story short Peugeot had changed the specification for a much thinner gearbox oil which the garage had used. I took the van to a gearbox specialist and had the gearbox oil changed for the original specification and the cure was immediate, no crunching and easy changes, I suggest you try the same.

chrisvesey - thank you.  I did have the oil changed in the old gearbox before getting a new reconditioned one but have no idea what was used at any time!  If you could be definitive about what is required, I'd be very willing to ask the questions!

I can't define the actual oil that is needed but if you explain to the garage that you need to have the old type standard gearbox oil, hopefully Frank or one of the other contributors knows the actual spec.
