Noise Killer Empty Noise Killer

Post by Eltel Thu Oct 12, 2017 10:15 am

Just received the latest copy of MMM November 2017 and noticed a advert by a company called Noise Killer.

As a sufferer of tinnitus I like to have the radio on when I’m driving but also being slightly deaf I need to have it on louder than management likes.

Has any one fitted a noise killer sound proofing kit to there Peugeot based Nuevo, and if so does it cut down the engine and road noise levels.

Alternatively I’ll leave management at home.

Noise Killer Empty Re: Noise Killer

I'm quite convinced that most of the noise by far comes from the road. If you drive onto a stretch of really smooth tarmac it's like going suddenly deaf!! The engine noise is minor in comparison.

That said, I don't see how what is only an acoustic blanket can suppress that noise, which is transmitted through the structure of the van, finally making the driving compartment almost resonate.

You could wrap an engineer's old fashioned listening stick in layers of cotton wool, but it wouldn't make the slightest difference to the transmission of the sound energy . . . in fact it would improve the clarity by insulating against extraneous vibrations impinging on the stick.

In my opinion don't bother, or find someone who has installed the kit and will tell you honestly if it works!!

P.S. I also suffer from constant tinnitus, but fortunately I have learned to "tune it out" so it's only an occasional nuisance. I'm fully aware of it now, but I wasn't until I read your post!  smile!

I fitted a kit on our '98 Bessacarr, we have an old Snooper sat navy that does not have a very loud speaker which had to be set at the highest setting to hear it. The kit did work, didn't make It whisper quiet but did reduce the noise level.
It is a comprehensive kit which includes pieces for the engine bulkhead, engine blanket, bonnet, inside the doors, cab floor, wheel arches, footwells, and seat boxes.
Having said that I find our 2013 van quieter so haven't seen fitting one as a priority, though have thought about it.

That certainly does sound very comprehensive Mike.

Did you still notice a dramatic difference dependent upon the road surface? That seems to me to be the most significant factor, and we can't do much about that. Running with lower tyre pressures might help reduce the noise, but that opens up a whole new debate, with the TPMS creating further problems with recent vans.

Thanks for the information.

Good morning Eltel

Yes, I fitted a noise killer kit to our previous Peugeot based Autocruise, like Mike the full works including floor, doors, underbonnet plus the acoustic blanket.

It certainly made a difference to the engine noise but as Gromit has suggested it makes little difference to road noise and none of course to wind and door seal noises. Just the acoustic blanket would be as good as a chocolate teapot, in fact mine scalded on the exhaust so I took it off. The kit comes with pre cut self adhesive panels but you must make sure the underbonnet is clean otherwise they do not stick properly also some were a little fiddly to attach.

Would I buy recommend one?
In as much as there will be a noticeable improvement in engine noise level, yes. If you are however expecting a huge transformation then probably not.

Yes I would say it did reduce the road noise, Dave, but a noisy concrete surface would still be worse than tarmac.

That is from memory as it is over 2 years since we changed vans! If my age was still visible you could assess how good my memory might be! biggrin

Just going out to give the van a run, I'll put my hearing aids in and see if I need a kit for this van! lol4

Thanks Mike

I was willing to be convinced, but after what you and Hog have reported I think I'll put up with the noise.

If the kit worked too well I would hear the crockery smashing when I hit a traffic calming bump too fast!!!!  Whistle1  lol4

While we are on the subject of noise has anyone ever compared tyres for different noise levels. I have Continentals and find them very noisy on any surface less than billiard ball smooth (and that's on a Mercedes

I have seen comparisons Willy, but I'm not sure if it was on here or another forum.

If you put "Motorhome tyre noise" into Google there are loads of responses. Could be worth a read later.  up!

Look at dB information on tyre dealer website. With my old x244 Ducato there was a lot of engine noise. On my 2.2 X250 the main noise is tyres and rattles and creams from cooker, microwave and furniture. Take hearing aids out?
