Hillcroft Holiday Park

We had a few days at this site a couple of weeks ago. It's a pretty big site with statics, lodges, Pods and two tent fields. There are hard standings around one of these but they have created fully serviced pitches elsewhere with a new facilities block in construction. In our view, the extra couple of bob to use these was well worth paying. It's a 5 or 10 minute stroll into Pooley Bridge, it's about the same back depending on how long you have stayed in the bar of one of the 4 local hotels biggrin There is a small, but sharp, incline as you enter the Holiday Park but otherwise it's relatively flat. Folk running the site (owners I think) were welcoming and the warden took a very common sense approach to his work. At one point he appeared from his caravan to confront some jokers who thought it would be fun to wander around the site at night with their torches. He pleasantly, but firmly, disabused them of that idea and sent them back to their tents.

Pooley Bridge has a Post Office couple of food shops with enough stuff to keep most folk going. The "steamers" sailing from the local pier are a big attraction and popular. We took it part way down the lake and walked back but you can stay on the whole trip or get a bus back from Glenridding. It's also possible to get a Stagecoach bus from Pooley Bridge to Bowness (on Windermere), takes about an hour and every second bus is open topped (great idea that for the Lakes rainyday ). We thought it was good well run site, easy access from the motorway and definitely will be kept in our plans for a return visit.

Now the health warning. The popularity of watersports on Ullswater and the proximity of Pooley Bridge to Penrith means it gets very (very) busy at weekends.
