Extending drain tap for serviced pitches Empty Extending drain tap for serviced pitches

Post by BarryP Sat Aug 12, 2017 4:41 am

Ladies and Gents, Firstly, my thanks to those who guided me in the right direction for a folding dog gate. Made our own for a tenner.
Now I crave your experience again on the above topic. At present, we usually carry a waste container into which we (seemingly constantly) drain off waste water to tow to site disposal - too lazy to drive the van to the motorhome point every time! As age and infirmity encroach we are now more likely to find fully serviced pitches where fresh water and waste are (so to speak) "on tap". Fresh water is not a problem, but we have hit a snag in finding a way of piping our waste water directly to the pitch drain. The tap which AS have fitted to our van seems to be of a predictably odd size so finding a hose to fit it is proving problematic. The external diameter of the outlet is 15.4mm and the internal diam 13mm. Ideally, I am looking for a 5 or 6 meter length of hose with an internal diam of around 15.5/15.6 to slot over the tap outlet. Can I find any? Nope!
Has anyone else come across this issue and solved it without resorting to boiling up and stretching a garden hose?

Thanks in anticipation,

Barry

One of these might do it, with a length of normal hose.

Many thanks. Sadly, been there tried it - don't work. We only have a 2mm clearance on outside of spout without fouling on/off tap. Ideally, I would like to fit a Hozelok socket so that we just plug in a hose (as we do with fresh water hose) but that won't work either. Thanks for the suggestion though - much appreciated.

I use a (cut) bicycle inner tube, easily stored and flushed through.

Although we don't do fully serviced pitches very often, I had the same problem Barry. After doing the searches I gave up and have resorted to the low tech solution. I cut the neck end of a plastic pop bottle, inverted it into the articulated hose and used then used an elastic band to hold it in place on the waste tap.

It works ok, or it did  until today that is. I only have about a metre of hose and the site we are on (geared or caravans?) needs at least 3 or 4 times that. Ho hum   winks

Sorry don't know your van but could you not simply change the tap so that you could use either the grey waste pipe or a hosepipe connector, Plenty on E bay or you could ring CAK tanks for advise

We found this problem with the Duetto when we first started motorhome travels. The van had a short pipe with a tap on the end clipped under the door sill. I replaced this with a longer pipe and more clips.
The Rienza has a  tap fitted into the side skirt of the van. I have seen another coach build with an extension pipe fitted with a tap on the end  by-passing the origional tap. I have gone down the line of a hoselock tap fitting and a length of old garden hose. Our tap must be different giving enough spout to put the fitting on and leave it in place ready for the next stupidly placed drain. frustrating

I did see on one site someone had cut the side of a bottle about the size of a 4 pint milk bottle. It was fixed (not sure how) to a block of wood with a lenghth of large bore hose attached. The tap on the van was left open and bottle placed under, was much the same as a roof guttering hopper. The drains in the van are quite small and could never flow enough to overflow the hopper.

You might like to change the the tap for a straight through 3/4 inch plumbers isolating tap, you can then attach the hose with a tap connector attached to the hose.

I often use a washing machine outlet hose. It fits my Betty perfectly and it was a surplus hose taking up space at home. Prior to getting Betty, it was also used on my caravan grey water socket - perfect for sending grey water straight into hedgerows too.

I have just replaced our drain tap with one of these, then have a spare piece of 30mm waste pipe.

Hi Autosleeper do an attachment that fits over the outlet pipe  and will put  a length of grey pipe on it as well not at all expensive.  I also use some smaller diameter grey pipe which slots inside as an extension

Those "cheap" 1"bsp female hand lever ball valves sell for about £10 at industrial suppliers.

Thanks to all who came up with ingenious solutions. We considered swapping the tap but were deterred as we last year had a drip from the fresh water drain and it was a pig to fix. The outlet doesn't leak so if it ain't broke etc...........
Looking at the options, the easiest is the lemonade bottle funnel of course, but we plumped for acquiring 10 metres of 19mm ID waste hose from Ebay. This fits over the tap with a small air gap and is held in place with two re-usable cable ties. Interested to hear that AS supply an option - they were bl....y unhelpful when I phoned them. In 25 years of caravanning and motorhoming I have always been irriated and amazed by the somewhat basic truism that the idiot who designs these massively expensive vehicles has apparently never used one! I found this particularly true of AutoTrail when we bought a new £60K van with a multitude of design faults and shoddy build quality. In all, 21 issues were eventually sorted under warranty. I wrote to the MD suggesting that they might like to refer these issues back to the design team. Basically he couldn't give a toss! We sold the van.
Caravans are no better when it comes to basic hardware such as taps, pipes and tubing. Do they but it all from China? The plumbing systems in vans and MHs has advanced little since the Romans. Will buy German in future!!
Thanks again to everyone who replied.
