Do you ever wonder about your previous vans?

Post by roli on Wed Aug 02, 2017 1:49 pm

In a recent discussion the subject of previously owned vans came up and where they ended up.

Our 1st van we saw a few months after the swap but the 2 AS vans haven't been seen since.

Wonder if anyone on here has either -
2000 Executive 2.5td.    W148PTO
2008 Windsor.               HX08ZRL
Both were 8 when swopped

Don't suppose anyone on here has them

Not quite the same as you are asking, but have you seen:

https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

this website will give you quite a bit of data about your vehicles, including telling you if they are taxed.

Saw one of ours at the Malvern Show a couple of years ago.

I went up to speak to the new owner (as you do) but he was a real surly git. As I approached he grunted, "Yeah. What do you want?"

I lost interest and walked away, leaving him with his knuckles dragging on the ground!!  Whistle1

Wonder if he's a member on here??  confused0

Really Dave?  I am surprised. Most MH owners are very friendly and only too happy to chat...ask my wife. I sold my last van in part exchange through a dealer, and when I went back for a habitation check, I made some enquiries. I found out it had gone to a good home. You like to know these things.

Agreed Bob, which is why I was so surprised.
Usually you need only say hello, and an hour and several beers later you have a new friend!  up!

It's not often I'm lost for words, but I was taken totally by surprise. (Well, I wasn't entirely lost for words but there were ladies nearby, and it just isn't worth the effort of bothering with pillocks like him.)

Yep, again agree. The other ones to look out for are the casual people walking past who are just nosey, and have no real interest in MHs.  That's where the tinted windows come into their own. You can hide.

When I got Betty I decided I did not need the car anymore.  It was a very nice looking tonka toy (Suzuki Vitara) in Victoria Violet ... very girlie and had lots of girlie interest when I put it on eBay.  The auction was won by a bloke who came to pick it up on a flatbed.  He complemented its appearance and said it looked immaculate (well, you make that extra effort when you are selling!) so smugly I asked if it was for a special lady in his life.  To his amusement, he watched my face change to horror when he told me he was going to off-road it! fight

Blodwen the 1972 early bay was sold via a friend to a couple about 10 miles away, but we have only seen her once in the four and a bit years.

Dilys had a new number plate so will be tricky to spot, but I'm sure she sold quickly, people were cooing over her before we left the dealer where she was p/xd.

Miss both for different reasons, but loving the new Kingham.

That was me! look here .... hugegrins only joking. It does make you wonder why people buy a 'van in the first place if they are not happy using it. It takes all sorts I suppose. Back to the subject, I do wonder what happened to my first A/S. It was a Rambler GL 1994 L reg. on a Fiat 1900 Diesel which I have been told was rare or never made, which would make it very rare,   smile! But definitely a Fiat as apposed to a Talbot. I bought it off a chap in Chard who was going to use it to tow his race car on a trailer but decided it was to small. He had a garage in Chard at the time. This would be around 2001. I had it for 2 years and sold it to a chap in south Wales. He stopped on the services on the M4 on the way home and it wouldn't start when he went back to it. Odd, as it was never a problem while I had it

I regularly cruise the EBay pages and have seen three or four of my past loves being handed on. I've seen my 68 Commer twice  with two different sellers over an eight year time period , the first time it had been fitted with a Sunbeam 1715 engine and the next time it had a colour change.

Not yet Terry, I wanted it 1st August but there was a delay that meant I couldn't have it until the 10th / 11th August.....
So, we decided to wait for the new registration on 1st September!

It's been a difficult decision, I'm desperate to get out n about!

You poor souls down south, we've had to resort to using sun cream when we were in Yorkshire   snigger  In the Lakes now so we probably can reduce the uv factor by at least 5   lol4

To get back to the original post...... I sold my Rienza in 2015 to Perthshire Caravans and some time later saw a post from MartinM on this forum.    He was from Edinburgh and I contacted him as I had all the original instructions for all the on board accessories.   Eventually met up and at that time he was pleased with the van but was finding storage difficult as he stayed in Edinburgh.   Don't know how things progressed.

Re: Do you ever wonder about your previous vans?

Post by repoort on Fri Aug 11, 2017 9:34 pm

...how about this -
I've bought and sold quite a few VW campervans over the years, the majority of them privately...whilst all the deals were interesting, different people from different places, and, although I have seen a few of the local vans again, one in particular was very unusual....it wasn't actually an Autosleeper this time, a '96 T4 from a small converter (Nu-Venture). Bought via a Preloved advert, from just outside Blackpool...went down, viewed it, agreed a price and was quite happy with the van for a year or so, didn't have to spend out on it, but as normal, eventually wanted something better. It had just turned 100k.
So an ad on Preloved followed, and very quickly a nice couple from Seascale bought it - and I made a profit on it.

So far so normal......life goes on,other vans followed, the years roll by.....
And then, while once looking on Ebay for a van, I saw the van again - this is five years later !   it was an auction ad by a local dealer as a part exchange. It looked much the same, but now with 162k on the clock. I went to look at it, more out of curiosity than anything, our campervans have gone a bit more upmarket by now.

Anyway, I watched the auction progress, and the last minute or so it was only attracting low bids....and I hesitated briefly, but in the end I didn't bid. It went for a bit less than I paid for it all those years ago (which I suppose shows how little depreciation there can be on campervans) and that was that, I had a chance but didn't take it....but a week or so later, it was back on again, the buyer backed out - so I just went and made a cash offer, and my old van came home again !
I got in touch with the previous owner from Seascale, and he was just as surprised as me. He filled me in with all the adventures in many countries they had travelled in it.
We used the van a few months before putting it on Preloved again. Within a week, a woman from Bradford came up and bought it....and I made a profit on it again !

I'm not sure what the moral of this story is....

You can download an app for android phones/tablets called MOT History, just pop the reg number and make and it tells you the history if it passed or even if it still exists .
First van I bought was WTC 467L it is still on the road but is red now instead of orange and white.
most of the other vans that I have owned are still being mot'd

I keep looking at Duettos   whilst on our travels and thinking some one got a good deal with ours, N81GFM. The amount we spent on it made it  hard to part with  but we made the move for good reasons and are pleased with the Rienza.
The Duetto is still taxed so I presume in use some were.
I seem to spend money on vehicles just before selling for some odd reason. Having said that one of my Landrovers wouldnt have made it to Liecester services if I hadnt . Last seen be driven south down on the M1 in a cloud of smoke. Cash in hand I then got the bus into Liecester and train home.  blushes

My old van a Topaz 2002 is still with the buyer I sold it too, sold for more than I paid, he lives not far from me, and he often stops by my house for a chat, he is very pleased with it, just him and a black Labrador dog. nice  to know it is being looked after.

Our first van, a VW T25 hi-top Autostrada Diamond RV is still, apparently, on the road.
This was a "brickie" van with the rear water-cooled flat four. We roamed all over Europe in it for a few years- as long as I remembered to tighten the exhaust manifold nuts every 5k miles it was brilliant; after losing some in Italy I bought a supply of brass replacements and gave them a gentle squeeze in a vice before fitting. No variation of shake-proof washers, snake-oil or "stiff-nut" would stay on the threads.
Really would love to see it an check if any of the many modifications I made are still in place. Is there a website to check vehicle addresses available to Joe Public (the wheel-clamping cowboys, etc. seem to have access to DVLA records).
