Air con units

Post by samleeds on Thu Jul 20, 2017 6:42 pm

Given the temps abroad now started me thinking of getting some kind of air con for the van so we can go further afield. Has anyone installed one or even know of a good way to cool the van.

Not air con but tried and tested in summer Spain and Morocco and very effective : buy a set of silver car windscreen covers ( the sort with a foam backing and silver foil) and clothes peg or tie with tape to the OUTSIDE of your open windows. These reflect the sun and mean you can leave the windows open to catch any breeze but not have the glare of the sun. Using internal silvered screens means the windows still get hot and act as a big internal radiator.

Either make a similar screen for the open top roof vents or, do as I did, and put an open dark coloured umbrella up through the big roof vent. This I angled to block the sun and it did that as well as acting like a boat scuttle and channelling air into the van. Tie the end to the vent handle to stop it being blown away.

A 12V Endless Breeze van is expensive but very much more effective than cheaper alternatives and putting a wet tea towel over the front or ice blocks in front helps too.

Hab air con is very nice but noisy for those near you. Cab air con is a very good thing however.

When it is very hot and sunny try to shade your fridge vent area with something as it improves the fridge efficiency. An internal small fan in the vent helps too.

As Quilter has stated, Endless Breeze fans are effective and if you see one available, grab it up as I read on another forum recently that they're no longer in production  blushes

We have hab air con factory fitted along with the Truma iNet box. FANTASTIC. When you are out for the day you can text your van and have it turn on the air con for you before you get back. BUT it will only run from mains. The start up current is specified as being 15A but we haven't tripped any mcbs so it can only be for a short duration.
