Photobucket advert

Post by Corgster on Sat Jul 08, 2017 11:15 pm

I get a large advert about upgrading photobucket right across the profile area and into the actual message itself. How do I get rid of this - I can't seem to close it. Thanks

Which thread would that be? Its a really annoying ad. I really don't want to upgrade as it suggests

The link Steve gave shows the history of the error. The important thing is for you to change your profile picture. The one you are using is linked to Photobucket. Try selecting a file that you know is on your computer.

Hi wave
Go to your profile (fom the home page).

Click "Avatar"

In the bottom of three boxes "Link to an off site Avatar" copy and paste or type this:

https://imgfast.net/users/3014/30/14/83/avatars/8236-19.png

Click "Save",

This will (should) change your avatar to the forum default. You can off course link to any other image as long as it is the right size

Presumably, just like me, the image you first chose was on your computer, not stored on Photobucket.

That's right. Never used it anyway and after seeing the mither it's caused, never will.

It's a very common misconception but you cannot link to an image that is stored on your computer. You need a host of some kind but not necessarily Photobucket. When you post the link in your profile the image is copied elsewhere.

Here's a post cut and pasted from another thread:
"
Beetee wrote:Hi, yes you can, I have just done it.
What you will have done is upload the picture to a host, and then posted a link to the host so that the forum loads the picture from there, not from your computer. If you do try and post a picture on your computer you'll be the only one that can see it.
rose49f wrote: I admit I had to log into www.servimg.com
Ahh that means that your pictures (the ones you have posted on the forum) are on "Servimg" not on your computer although the picture uploaded to Servimg is a copy of the one on your computer. Incidentally I've just checked and the image you put in your last post is definitely on Servimg.

The point is that even if you don't use Photobucket you still need a similar host.

It's an important point because occasionally people have made the mistake of posting a link to their own computer and it seemed to work for them but the rest of us got an "Image Unavailable " message or a blank image."

Incidentally dbroada and bulletguy both your avatars are stored on "imgfast"

Thanks for the explanation Brod. Had I thought about it I would have realised it was stored elsewhere.

When I added my van Gogh I just allowed the forum to do its own thing and it appears to have chosen "imgfast". Has PB been used for the default image?

Only Admin can say for sure but I'm 99.99% (recurring)  hugegrins sure that that's the case. I can't think of any other explanation.  All  the remaining PB "phantom" images seem to point at the same image on Photobucket and it's called "no-avatar". If we could see it I bet it's the old silhouette image we used to see when no avatar had been set. The new one is on "servimg".

Interesting to notice that if you go right back in time some members have this as an avatar. Obviously unaffected by the PB debacle.

This was forum member trophy in March 2011.  http://www.autosleeper-ownersforum.com/t175-slow-draining-blocked-sinks#818

  The URL for it is . . . https://imgfast.net/users/3014/30/14/83/avatars/18-27.png

I presume this was the forum default host at the time??

Ah. Probably not since member rov-ypa has the same image but a different URL.

Strange?

Hi  wave

Not all that strange, As you say  it seems that there have been several “default” locations over the years. That’s good news because there may not be quite so many of the Photobucket version as we (well I) had thought.  Admin may have used more than one host to spread the bandwidth about a bit (only a guess though).

I don’t know how the “Set Avatar” software works but certainly the link vanishes once it’s been set so presumably (there I go again) Admin sets the default location. I suppose there could be some built in criteria that moves the location around but I doubt it. Not that it’s important, just a matter of interest really, I like to know how things work. confused3

Sad Man (Brod).
