Touring Ireland

Post by Liz n on Wed Jul 05, 2017 10:37 am

Hello anyone who has toured Ireland in their motorhome/vans.
We are going via Loch Ryan to Larne and would be very happy to hear if anyone could recommend campsites and places to see in Eire.
We are planning to travel down the Atlantic Coast and see how far we get in 4 weeks. Any advice would be most welcome.
Kind regards,
Liz

Get local advice if you plan to do any circuits like the Ring of Kerry, and whatever you do - go in the same direction as the coach tours!!

Take care on the minor roads, many of which were (and probably still are) absolutely awful. As I said to a caravanner we chatted to, "At least you can't hear your crockery smashing!!"

The new main roads are superb, but on the minor roads the coach drivers and white van men drive straight toward you at high speed, assuming you can, and will get out of their way. You will be OK in your little van, which is basically the same as ours, but you will still have a few terrifying moments!!

Having got the doom and gloom out of the way, you will absolutely love it. The people are so friendly, and if you ask for directions they probably will grin broadly and say, "Sure, and if I was wanting to go there I wouldn't be starting from here!"

We used the "Green Book" for campsites. It was mentioned on here a couple of weeks ago, but most of the tourist offices have copies for sale. It was perfectly good enough for us, and most of the sites were situated near a town, rather than isolated out in the country.

We loved it, and hope to go back, probably next year.

One thing about the Sigma Liz, is there built like tanks, watch out for your wing mirrors though, take some gaffer tape as a precaution to stick them back on again.
Have a good trip, to be sure.
