I don't use FF, but it actually looks quite nice with the image blocker installed.

Here's a screenshot pic of the forum, ironically, hosted by TinyPic. :)

You'll have to disable your image blocker to see it though, so there's a catch 22 for your delectation fellas. :D

Ahhh, you're right Peter, I hadn't spotted that as I assumed it was because I wasn't logged in on FF.

It's either built in to the image blocker to remove the placeholders, or something to do with how FF renders the page with no images,

Got it! removes all images. Fine as a temporary fix, but having enjoyed tje convenience of the previous set up, I hope we can resume normal service soon.
Many thanks, Peter.

The majority of Photobucket's customers may pay nothing but I assume the advertisers pay?  I've been getting more and more annoyed with the adverts obliterating large parts of the page content on Photobucket recently anyway, making it virtually unusable, so I've been thinking of pulling the plug anyway.  This ransomware approach just made the decision easier.
If a large chunk of Photobucket's non-paying customers leave, then they will have less leverage to gain advertising revenue, so are shooting themselves in the foot either way.

How long before G**gle start to charge for searches?

I've tried a couple more different image blockers with FF and they all remove the placeholders.
There's some reference to this being a bug on the mozilla FF forums, so maybe it was never addressed and is part of FF?

If you scroll around the top of the posting box, and your mouse pointer changes to a hand or similar, you should still be able to find and click on the quote / report buttons etc.

Many people will have the same functionality on their router unless they are using the cheapest of the cheap from some service providers.

This forum along with hundreds of others is hosted by forumotion. Is it forumotion that have got to sort this or this forum? I would guess that Admin is away at the moment and with Peter Brown also away, I can't imagine it will be sorted soon unless forumotion deal with it

I have found a better way than the Image blocker. In FF right click one of the PB images, when you will find a tick box for block all PB images. Works fine on the quote, edit and last post buttons and avatars remain visible.

That doesn't work in my (Linux) version of FF without an image blocker, there's no tick box, glad it works for you though. (Y) (thumbsup)

I don't know which version of  Linux you're using but can you not just edit the "hosts" file by adding someting like "0.0.0.0 http://www.photobucket.com" ?

On the Linux version of Firefox, it seems that you can do this: Point to one of the offending "photos", right-click and choose "Block Element", which will open a window with the exact URL of the image. If you edit the URL right down to just photobucket.com then "Create" and everything from photobucket will be blocked (but you still get all of the buttons for some reason).

Only minor problem is that I can't quite figure out how to reverse the action!

Re: photobucket images

Post by Sleepy on Sat Jul 01, 2017 11:06 am

This is what I think has gone wrong:
Most websites store images (like the AS logo, back button, whatever) on another site and as the page is rendered, the image is referenced as needed.  This saves the need to store the image many times.  I think the forum stores its images on photobucket.  If the reference is wrong, then in my experience you can get an unpredictable different image... or some "error" message that the site sends you.
For example the source (reference) for the image at the top of this page, which if I recall with the AS logo, is:
<img src="https://2img.net/h/i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l600/asowners/as_ban10_zps0864ec26.png" alt="   The Auto-Sleeper Motorhome Owners Forum (ASOF)   ">
Now I don't know for sure why that is wrong - see my guess later -  but if it is, then this other image (always the same one) is being supplied by photobucket.
The other references are different btw, but they are always returning the same big square, probably rather than some tiny little image like a logo, arrow, etc.
If you BLOCK the photobucket site, then of course the images can't get through and that hides the problem.  But the way to fix it is for an admin to investigate why the references have gone wrong.
MY GUESS:
is that photobacket used to be a free way for sites like the forum to store these images.  But they have got wise to that and now want people to pay.  So it might be a free place to store family photos that are referenced once or twice a week, but not free for the AS forum that wants to reference a logo thousands of times a day.  Hence instead of returning a little logo, they send a great big picture telling admin to update the account to a paid status.  They (Photobacket = 3rd Party) know that this will really annoy the users (= 2nd Party) who will ask Admin (=1st Party) to fix the problem.

Apologies for the techy answer but it's a techy problem...

Firefox on Macbook

Firefox on Macbook - I went to Tools>PageInfo and highlighted the photobook link.  Then ticked the box which said Block Images.  Hope this helps. I'm no geek but searched about. allthumbz

True, but that's not the main reason why the forum does it like that. It's not the storage that's the issue - it's server and network bandwidth. Photobucket doesn't care much that the images take up disk space on their servers - they are small images and you only need one copy. But every time someone accesses an ASOF page, the images for the headers, buttons, etc., get delivered to us from Photobucket's servers, not those paid for by ASOF as part of their hosting package.

On a forum with a lot of users, that's a lot of network traffic that Photobucket ends up paying for.

Re: photobucket images

Post by Slaphead on Sat Jul 01, 2017 3:25 pm

Having spent several hours trying to resolve this, I was about to give up when I had a major break through.

I will try to detail the solution as clearly as I can:

click on the little "i" just in front of "www. autosleeper-ownersforum.com" up at the to left of you browser page.

This displays "www.autosleeper" and a little ">" at the right.  Click on the ">".

Now click on "more information".

Click on the "Media" button at the top.

This displays a list of web addresses.

Click on any of the upteen relating to Photobucket.

Look down at the bottom left and you will see a box to tick to let you block all the images from Photobucket.

Hope I have made this is clear.

Re: photobucket images

Post by Gromit on Sat Jul 01, 2017 4:50 pm

I wish it did on mine Slappers!!

Thanks for trying, but it doesn't work for me. I'm using Chrome, which may have a bearing on it????

EDIT - GOOD NEWS HOWEVER

It does allow a better solution than just blocking with the bolt on image blocker from Chrome.

When I click the little "i" I get a list of default settings, including "images". I set that to "Always block on this site" and it does.

What is very useful - it leaves the text descriptions for pretty well all the "clicky" buttons, except in the Reply Panel. Here you can hover the cursor to get what you want, for example the red text for this edit.

Thanks for the indirect help. It makes the forum more or less usable again. (Big smiley would have been inserted here!!)

The workarounds have been posted in more than one thread.

Only someone with admin rights can upload and redirect the button logos to another host.

Until then, I suggest that we all continue to SUPPORT this wonderful resource as best as we are able, by continuing to use it.

Well said!  It's not easy to sort it (I've failed to sort out my Android Tablet) but I've succeeded on my Macs and phone.

As things stand, those of us who've blocked images from Photobucket aren't able to see any photos on the Forum. Whilst we can put up with that temporarily, it is an unfortunate and retrograde limitation, so I hope that Admin will soon share with us their proposals for a permanent fix, such as hosting photos elsewhere.   Until then, let's put up with the inconvenience and use the Forum as usual as best we can.

I hope Admin will make a statement next week.
