photobucket images

Post by mcubbin on Fri Jun 30, 2017 2:45 pm

All of a sudden, when opening asof, the images have been replaced with a photobucket image which says 'please update your account to enable 3rd party hosting' any one else have this? it is a a pain as it obscures the text.

Yep, photobucket is rapidly becoming a farce that nobody should be using.

I've installed "Images On/Off" to Google Chrome, which helps, as you can toggle images on individual sites.

Kim, I don't use Photobucket but still get these messages, the forum is now, all but useless. How can I get rid. Or is it something that Admin needs to do?

Sorry Peter, my post is ambiguous in the sense that you'll still have this problem even if you never heard of Photobucket.

Google for the method of removing inline images from your chosen browser, Internet Explorer for example.

I just installed an extension to Google Chrome which works around the Photobucket problem by not displaying any images for ASOF pages, selectable for individual websites with just one click.
Your browser may require a different solution.

I have just added a block image addon to firefox. All the PB boxes now gone, including the quote, reply boxes etc. So it appears forum setup uses these as remote hosting.

Hope Admin can sort this as the forum is now unuseable, it would be such a shame if we/I lost it.

The boxes shouldn't be "gone" as such, they should just be replaced with text placeholders, which still work if you click on them as I just did to quote you Peter.

Hi wave

I can’t see it being fixed anytime soon. I suspect that only Admin could do anything about the forum images(at great expence) and the user images won't get restored unless we all pay $99.00 a year - yeah right!

Photobucket.com Terms of Use
Last revised June 28, 2017
http://photobucket.com/terms#ixzz4lT5MI8Oa

So we all have to pay $99.00 a year and the forum has to pay $399.00a year! Taking the Michael of what? i think Photobucket are completely out of order. They don't tell you what they intend to do beforehand so that you can make other arrangements if you want to.

They just trash the forum and won't release it again unless you pay. Little better than Ransomeware in my book. Don't forget they provided us with the link in the first place, encouraging us to do just what they are now charging for. censored!

All my TinyPic uploads also appear to have gone, as TinyPic is part of Photobucket.

I guess that the forum's pictorial history is effectively trashed.

Boxes are gone, no text placeholders. Had to allow images to get the quote button. Don't see last post green type buttons either.
Doesn't happen on any other forum I use. I notice thet with image blocked emoticons and format box images in text editor are also gone. Unless this can be resolved I am afraid I will be gone too. confused3

Looks like a lot of work to be done over the weekend by the admin staff.

Hope they can come up with a solution for this very good site.

I've just closed my Photobucket account but that has made no difference.

Thanks for posting the Google extension, at least that makes things a little better as a temporary measure.

Let's hope a more permanent fix is forthcoming.

Yup, seems to be, if I re-enable inline images.

EDIT: I was wrong, all my TinyPic images are in fact still visible in the original posts with the image blocker disabled.

This is all over the interweb, what are Photobucket thinking?

https://www.ghacks.net/2017/06/30/photobucket-now-charges-399-for-third-party-hosted-images/

Note that the images are not lost or deleted, any that you have on Photobucket can be recovered from your account (before you close it :-D ) and reposted via another site like imgur.com

You can also see them by right clicking the placeholder and selecting 'view image in new tab'.

Not so. See Google about Photobucket - several threads from various Fora, suffering the same as ours.

I guess if you want to be entirely fair, Photobucket must have a LOT of customers, the majority of which pay them nothing - so it may be that they have no choice but to "monetize" their existing user base or shut down?

I'm also not sure why this forum serves its buttons and headers from Photobucket, as it's not a technique commonly used on other forums, and it looks rather like they are using Photobucket as a Content Delivery Network to save that content from being delivered to us from their own servers (which means that the server capacity to deliver that content gets paid for by Photobucket!).

There has been plenty of evidence of other providers trying to get rid of historical unpaid services (e.g. Yahoo trying - and failing - to get rid of the Yahoo Groups service) so perhaps it's understandable from a commercial point of view.

Still damned inconvenient though!

Quite so mojo, the simplest answer would be for an admin to re-host the small images post haste and get the forum operating properly again.

The stupidity on Photobuckets' part is in doing this like a ransomware attack, it's not going to gain them many followers and subscribers after this is it.

Peter: I wonder if you would be so kind as to post the detailed steps which you took to achieve that? I am using firefox 54.0 (64 bit) . I went to Tools > Add-Ons - but didn't know what to serach for and what app to get and install, and what settings are needed in the app.

Mind you, if the problem isn't sorted for the whole Forum by Admin, I fear very few members will persist. What a tragedy.

Cymro

P.S. I, too, have closed my PB account - although it takes a week to become effective. But by now I know that closing my account won't help: it needs a universal Forum fix. I hope Admin can soon give us an interim statement of what they're thinking of doing (it's unreasonable to expect an instant cure, as we don't have the resources - but it would be comforting to know that they're on the case and aim to sort it. Otherwise we'll quickly wither....

See above Cymro, all that's required is for the buttons etc to be rehosted, not a major task, anyone with admin privileges could do it in less than an hour with access to the originals.

EDIT:

Here's a link to 'Image Block' for FF

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/image-block/

Click 'install', then click on the little picture icon in FF's top right bar to enable the blocker, then reload the ASOF page with F5
