ATERA STRADA DL TOWBALL BIKE RACK

Post by janniecop on Sat May 20, 2017 1:25 pm

Has anyone used one of these on a Peugeot Boxer Autosleeper Symbol?
I am using a WESTFALIA one just now but it doesn't allow the back doors to open to access the toilet cassette!

I haven't yet, but it's on my list as soon as I get my towbar fitted.

I want to keep it as small as possible, as I will only be carrying one bike, but apparently the DL2 still doesn't allow the doors to open with a bike attached, whereas the DL3 does ?

I would prefer to test this myself before I buy, as I would prefer the 2 bike and I assume the position of the bike nearest the van, will be the same distance from the back doors on either model.

Yes I'm not sure why the DL2 wouldn't be the same as the DL3 but it may have a longer movement away from the towball so allow more clearance?
I've sent an email query directly to ATERA asking them the question.

The DL2 doesn't move far enough away to allow the rear doors to open. I have just bought the DL3 and that works ok with the bikes on the outer 2 positions. See my post on towball mounted bike racks.

You may like to consider this:

I fitted a two bike Thule and the bike nearest the van has to have the handlebars turned to avoid hitting the rear.
I wish I had bought a three bike version and not use the first position.

Still unable to open rear doors but no big deal.

Would the DL2 work with only one bike mounted on the outer position, thus both the DL2 & DL3 would have an empty bike space on the inside, allowing the doors to open or is it more complicated than that.

It's that aspect I'm wishing to test when I get the tow bar fitted.

I think you will find that the DL2 just won't slide out far enough for the doors to clear the rack. Take a look at the videos on you tube. I wanted the DL2 but after studying the videos and still photos decided that it had to be the DL3. I would be interested if you tried the DL2 though.

Thanks for that, I would really like to try before I buy, as using a DL3 for one bike seems a bit OTT, but if I have no choice ??

I'll post the result if I can check a DL2.

Can you open the back doors with the bikes on the rack though, or would you have to take them off the carrier if you needed access before reaching the site eg. Motorway services or roadside.

Have you heard anything back yet John ?

I sent a web submission to them asking if there was anywhere I could try before I buy and I'm still waiting for a response.

Looking at this video, the empty bike space should be the same size on both the DL2 and the DL3, leaving me holding on a little bit of hope that I can get away with the DL2 and only one bike on it:

I got mine from roofbox.co.uk but they advised me that I would need the DL3 for the doors to clear the rack.

Thanks Cookie99, I'd already looked at roofbox.co, but they have a note on their website advising that they are a mail order company only and other than a registered office at Sedbergh, they don't have anywhere to visit to try before I buy.

I don't know if they are the same company, or are the official representatives for Atera, but Atera's website has the same registered address in Sedbergh.

**EDIT**  I've just seen on the Atera website that they also trade as the Roofbox Co. smile!
