Engine dies

Post by plattypus on Fri May 05, 2017 5:30 pm

. Hi long time since I've been on the forum. Got a real problem with my Symbol. The engine intermittently cuts out, we can do 100 miles with no problems next day 30 miles and it'll just die. It's been with 2 garages. Had nearly everything changed cost me £1500 and still their baffled. Any ideas please? Getting really desperate now as both garages don't want to see it again !!

Once had a similar thing on a Volvo Penta boat engine. Intermittant and irregular stopping, usually would restart after a minute or 2. Turned out to be a bit of silicon sealant floating about in the tank, and occasionally blocking the pick up pipe. Have they looked at the tank or breather?

Hi Ploughlin thanks, they've had the tank out so presumably this has been checked, I'll keep you pasted.

Intermittent faults are very difficult to fix. You dont say how it starts after an involuntary stop?
I suspect a fuel problem. However from a distance its almost impossible to fix.
Too many questions to ask without seeing the vehicle.

Hello Jockey
Starts up usually ok after a few minutes. It's been with a diesel specialist for 6 weeks, he's now trying to fit a new computer after everything else failed.

I have had similar faults in three different vehicles.  One was a petrol Ford Galaxy - not sure whether it was an injection engine, but that was the fuel pump.  Then a petrol injection Vauxhall Frontera and it was a simple, cheap fuel pump relay.  Most recently (and, most expensively), my current non-injection, diesel T4 which turned out to be the fuel pump again.
Hope you find your solution soon
