Dog Harness

Post by NigelNomad on Mon May 01, 2017 6:37 pm

Hi,

We have just bought our first van (a 1998 VW Autosleeper Topaz). Can any dog owners recommend the best way to secure a dog. We don't get the van for a couple of weeks so just want to work out the best way to secure him and if that is with a harness on the seat we need to make sure he won't fall off as I wallow around a corner:)

Thanks

My dog wears a car harness from Pets at Home. When I was on my own in the van she would be plugged into the passenger side seat belt plug and on her bed between the seats. Now she still has her bed there but her harness is round the "stalk" thing the passengers seat belt plugs into, so we sort of share it. Does that make sense?

Thanks Nora, there seems to be a lot of choice but round the stalk sounds a good idea.

Our dog is trained to stay in her basket on the side bench, close behind the diver's seat. Then if I have to slam the brakes on she has only inches to fly into the rear of my seat, which is soft enough not to hurt her. (She travels on my side so Mrs Gromit can keep an eye on her.) I don't like the idea of a harness in case the strap was wrapped around her neck when I had to brake.

If your dog will stay on the floor as you travel, consider placing a sheet of plywood across the passage and behind the cab seats. You could glue a sheet of foam rubber onto it if necessary, and if the dog will stay in his/her basket close to the board he/she should be OK, and he/she won't become a missile in the event of an accident.

The dog would still be a missile, just not for such a long distance. I prefer my dog restrained.

PM and I'll send you the link

Purchased from Pets at Home a lead with a clasp at one end and a clip to fasten to the harness at the other end.

I secure it to the metal bed frame or passenger seat metalwork and used in conjunction with a full harness

Sorry Eltel, only just seen your msg. I've actually just ordered exactly what you have suggested along with a more padded harness so he can sit between us on the floor or on the rear seats:)
