Fiamma security lock and handle
I need to fit a door handle to the rear door of my Nuevo for easier access. I have got one which is shaped like a squashed u shape and sticks out about a foot from the side of the van, with bolts through the side of the van attached through 2 holes in a 4" long metal plate. It is described on the box as a security de ice. When not in use the handle folds across the habitation door and locks.
What concerns me is that the side of the van is less than an inch thick, so a determined thief could smash the side of the van by giving the handle a hard pull because of the leverage of the long handle.
I would prefer to buy an extra lock for the door and use the handle unlocked. Has anyone any experience in this area please? Advice needed.
Thanks

I have seen that, not on an Autosleeper but a Swift, the securing bolts pulled through the wall because of the amount of leaverage, needs to be fixed to the frame in the wall if possible. You can get a lock that fits to the door that secures the handle to the door that should help to prevent this, but you have to drill through the door and have a metal plate on the inside.
The alternative is the type that rotate across the door and lock, not sure how secure they but they act as a deterrent.

Re: Fiamma security lock and handle
Hello Peterm, the practical fitment of exterior locks on vans was recently highlighted on this forum. You can have all the entry points fitted with locks but a determined thief would simply break a window glass or otherwise to gain entry. Obviously the efforts you go through to secure your van would score you brownie points with your insurance provider. It is more likely that a criminal would want to steal your m/h and that is less likely if fitted with ignition immobilizer and alarm. We had the fiamma security hand rail like you mention on a previous used Nuevo.. that gave us some peace of mind. If you are meaning to fit another habitation door lock, you might like the Milenco inside/ outside lock. This model is of interest to us as you can feel more secure against attack as the door can be locked from the inside, the delay may give sufficient time to arm yourself and repel any aggressor. Others on this forum I'm sure will give further advice. Regards

Re: Fiamma security lock and handle
If your van is similar to ours as you enter through the habitation door (I think it is) I think I would be more inclined to beef up the hand rail just inside, which is attached to the side of the fridge unit.
Ours is a token rail with more thought to appearance than practicality, but I'm sure a better one could be sourced and fitted so there's plenty to grab hold of to help you up the steps.
Just a thought.

I am always concerned that this type of device could prevent exit in an emergency.
If the worst happens, I want to be able to run away quickly, not try to find out which door will open, half asleep, in my jim jams in the dark with a van full of smoke.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. Most useful. In the end I didn't use the device - if anybody wan't to buy it- but settled for a Milenco inside/outside door lock, and pursuaded Janet that she was fitter than she thinks.
Incidently, I have just fitted safety devices of the side window catches - it consists of a six inch nail pushed into the space under the closed catch with 2 inches of plastic tube shoved over the window catch handle and the nail. You can't open it without breaking something - which is probably what a determined thief would do. But it will deter amateurs. Bloody cheap though. Three catches per window, 4 windows = 1m of thin drain pipe, a left over, and 12 nails, stolen from a skip.
Thanks again
Peterm and the lovely Janet
