My new storage bay and hide away

Post by samleeds on Sat Apr 22, 2017 11:27 am

Over the last few weeks ive been rearranging things up top and building blind storeaway places to accommodate stuff. Here is the end result and before anyone asks, the total weight up top is less than 50kg and it does not make the van unstable, not one little bit. In fact it puts more weight over the front axle making the ride less bouncy and more stable in the corners. Bear in mind i have a top gross load rating of 2890kg and im at 2810 at the moment which incorporates over 650kg of payload.

The top is empty and Ive built a 4 inch deep box to fit into the void above the head and inside that is the telly and all the electronics for the charging station and solar regulators with switches to isolate and spread the loads. Comes in handy at bedtime when one master switch flicked turns every single light out regarding charging leds and standby leds.

The over-cab storage was one of the things I miss most going back to a pop-top from a high-top. Fantastic for all of the bedding and loads of other stuff. I had to reserve it for lightweight stuff only, as mine was on a Transit and you could definitely feel adverse effects if you put lots of weight that high up - but some vans are affected by this more than others.

Sam  a good job,  I'm afraid the catches and bolts would be head catches  I would hit my head getting into the back every time I would put the fitting on the sides above the seats to keep the gangway clear or better still hidden fitting accessed from above to keep your compartment a secure area for valuables etc. Like mojo I miss the front overhead locker of our previous vans.

I had thought to move them but they sit pretty flush and its never been an issue. I took the van out to the welders this morning to get a little tack weld on my rear right steady and empty she was faster but swayed a bit. Fully loaded with the front overhead full makes her a lot more stable on the road. Im guessing the extra weight over the front axle makes her sit down and handle the rear scooter load a bit easier. I love driving this van more than Our new Ssangyong. God only knows how people with no over head locker get on, lol.
