Cycle rack????

Post by rose49f on Fri Apr 21, 2017 4:58 pm

Going to Badminton Horse Trials in a couple of weeks and thinking of taking my drive away awning. Has anyone ever carried 'things' other than bikes on their cycle rack as one of my ideas was to safely tie it on the rack. I saw a van one day on the motorway with something that wasn't a bike tied on his cycle rack. (and it wasn't a box). Suggestions please.

No problem at all so long as it doesn't weigh more than 60kg and you lash it on well, preferably with two or three ratchet straps.

I carry a bike and a small box. Weight is within limits but the box on my Topaz obscures the number plate, requiring a secondary plate. The lighting is not obscured.
There's always something unexpected to make things a bit difficult!

I carry my wife's small shopping mobility scooter on ours, with a cover....the battery travels inside of course, as it is heavy.

Do we have to have the cross hatch red and white board with reflectors on in the UK? and if the number plate is obscured does it go that the number plate lights are as well. Sorry Keith, just being difficult snigger

Biffo
I have never been aware of a requirement for the "cross hatch board", but that is not a definitive answer.  I mounted the extra (visible) number plate on the luggage box with two standard LED number-plate downlighters powered from a (switched) 9v battery located inside the box.
The arrangement was scrutinized and passed as satisfactory by my traffic cop neighbour. I have been using it for three years. I now have a towbar and lighting socket and would have used this to power a lighting board had it been available at the time.   Keith

I have carried an largish awning on the bike rack of our last van with no difficulty but I did use a good quality bag.   No overhang of the cycle rack so didnt use my marker board

For peace of mind, will always display cross hatch board to hopefully mitigate any action or incident on the pubic highway. The motto being, SEE and be SEEN!

No, they are not required in the UK and even the compulsory aluminium one that I use in Italy, does not have the reflectors fitted.

As Paramedic says, anything that helps you stand out can't be bad  allthumbz
