Microwave in 2013 symbol

Why does the bottom of a baked potato burn when microwaved on auto baked potato setting.

Because it's standing on something that gets hot?

Really!!! We just placed it on the revolving glass plate like we have always done at home with never a problem

Almost certainly the problem is caused by the standing wave pattern in the microwave. Different manufacturers have different ways to reduce the effect, but it's almost impossible to eliminate.

It probably affects something like a potato worse than a mainly liquid food as there is no way for convection (within a fluid) to mitigate the effects. A lower power setting (if available) should help, as will splitting the cooking time into shorter sections with a "resting" period in between.

I was right then.

It's standing on a hot wave! lol4

Thinking about this a bit more.

If the spud is on a revolving glass plate, can it be a standing wave that's causing it to burn at the bottom? Very unlikely I would have thought, since the standing wave would be static while the spud would constantly move around, passing through and past it.

That's the whole point of having the revolving plate, as I understand it?

Curiouser and curiouser.

It's true that the revolving plate is intended to make the heated object pass through areas of different heating intensity, but like all things, it's a compromise. The standing wave effects tend to be at their most intense a short distance away from the metal inner casing (i.e. small multiples of the microwave operating wavelength), and so the most "mixed up" area would be as high up off the base as you can get it - but that seriously reduces the amount of food that you can get in - which is why the plate is down close to the floor.

Spacing the food up from the bottom of the oven with a microwave-inert material is likely to help, as it will get it away from the "edge effects" which tend to be the most intense.

G
You learn so much on this forum. Thanks Mojo for the explanation of the operation of a microwave. How are you on black holes or quantum physics?

Nice one Mojo.
Stuff the black holes - can he fix a submersible pump!! Whistle1  lol4

I think I would just turn the spud the other way up half way through the cooking process. had_idea

Sorry Dave...you are now in the realms of fanticy. No human brain can fathom the submersible pump. Dump it and replace  with an external. You will have seen the threads. I did...it changed my life!

I was only "averagely Ok" (or perhaps not quite that good) on black holes and quantum mechanics. Sorry Dave, submersible pumps are not something I've experienced - fortunately. My camper vans have had only Trail Kings - or foot-operated pumps if you go back far enough...

Already did Bob, and it changed mine too! allthumbz

Mojo - At least the foot operated pumps didn't go wrong, but you did risk a back attack of stamper's cramp!! lol4

You learn something new here every day. I'd no idea there was an official term for it!

TBH the foot operated pumps were a bit of a pain. They never actually failed to work, but compared to an electric pump they had to be high up (compared to a pump buried in a void under floor level) and so priming each time out would often be a tedious exercise...

And of course with the foot pump you could never pump fast enough for your wife to have a decent shower.
