Odd fonts creeping into some members' posts

Post by inspiredron on Tue Mar 28, 2017 12:23 am

One or two of our members seem to always post in a different font to normal.  As far as I can see there is no setting in Preferences that will do this on all posts so are they doing it every time they post - or am I missing something?  I find it off-putting, personallly, and would rather see the standard font - or am I just being boring!

Yes, I am anyway. I'm  struggling with the default setting on the forum with it being a light blue on light grey [not enough contrast between them and difficult for me to read on my PC and pad]. I used to type in a few letters and select bold but that upset some here so now I just change the text colour to black and that works for me, though it's still a strain to read some posts from others.  So, I'll suggest that the standard colour is reset to black [to help some of us wrinklies].

Yes (proper) black does show up better than the normal colour.

Black on white on the mobile version - very clear. I think I'm right in saying that if the standard font was to be changed from grey to black, then only Admin could do that?

Yes Peter for it to be standard.  Posters can change colour when posting.  Start of problem with blues greens and reds being used despite instructions on forum not to

There is a choice of colours etc in the Quick Reply area. You can also choose the font and size here.

Thanks for inserting that Peter but many don't read the instructions hence the text thing and also posting before doing a brief intro

Sorry for violating the rules. I won't do it again as I find stupid fonts and colours in any email or post a bit annoying and pointless.

I always use the default black font that appears on my posts on a light blue background and until I posted my coloured version hadn't even bothered to find out what the icons above the Quick Reply box are for. Perhaps whoever is responsible for the site should get rid of the options that are not permitted.

On a slightly related point and without wishing to try and find out how to do it and violating rules, how come some postings have a slightly different background colour like the one from roli.

Roli's post is on light blue because I, as the originator, pressed the Thanks button. That only appears on the originator's view of the thread and he has only one chance to thank.  The post background then turns light blue

As said Roli's is a "Thanks", but, at least on my view, posts appear alternately light blue and slightly darker blue, which is a phpBB feature, I think.

I think you are correct. It's the same on the RTMR forum, which is phpBB too.

That is certainly true on my tabket and Roli's post is green. Not sure if the same applies in W8 or W10.
Mayneed to check this on a PC

All posts appear in alternate shades of light blue and Roli's is in light green on both my PC (win10) and on the iPad. Sometimes there is consequential change of either (or both) change of type face or background if a poster has included material or information that has been cut and pasted from other source.

I support the standardisation of both background and text, as far as it's practical to do.

This all rather begs the question:
if we're not supposed to use this facility, why provide it?   scratch head scratch head scratch head

cheers
Roger

PS Does it also apply to signatures?
If so I'm being a very naughty boy and better change it back to boring or else remove it
PPS Just found and read the whole rules which indeed confirm I am a very naughty boy, so am now off to delete signature.  quick_run
Sorry Sir Terry.   uncertain

There are loads of features on the phpBB that require activating or deactivating. When Ed set this site up he selected features that he wanted at that time.

Thanks for pointing this out - I have been aware of some users using non standard fonts / colours. In the past we have been very strict about this as what may appear fine on your computer or device can look very untidy or difficult to read on someone else's device.

Without appearing to be a killjoy if members could stick to the default font and text size it would be greatly appreciated please.

Ed
