2000 Ducato / boxer heater matrix paranoia?

Post by fishdude on Sat Mar 18, 2017 11:59 am

My 2000 Peugeot boxer 1.9TD has drips of water (rust coloured) in the passenger footwell.
It happened over the course of a week with no driving.
It has rained heavily during that time.

I ran engine to full operating temp with heater max and on de-mist.
The windscreen did NOT mist up.

I will take oit for a test drive later.

Am I being paranoid.

Your profile says you have a Gloucester, obviously wrong if year is 2000. Would help to know correct model.

You may wish to say hello here...

Anyway this thread from 2013 may help you confirm the problem.

Check that to see if the drain tube on the heater intake under the windscreen is blocked with leaves or similar and letting water overflow into the heater.
If it is, and there is water in the heater, you can access it by removing the the blower motor - this will give you room to get a cloth or sponge inside to mop it up.
Don't forget to clear the drain of course.

Right click on the error button, go to "properties" and it gives you the URL.

It doesn't always work, depending on where the image is stored, but more than often you can find it.

Hmm mine does not mist up so suggestion is NOT heater matrix.
Wonder if it can be just rain mixing with rust?
Unfortunately my coolant is red and was rusty coloured, which was why I had a drain and new rad.

Road test soon

Touch and hold brings up a menu including "open in new tab" on my Samsung Tab.

Oh well test drive over and more drips. About same as phot after 20 mile round trip.
A visit to garage I reckon.
I'm normally tempted to DIY but some posts suggest it horrendous.

Check the heater hose connections.
Check the plenum chamber drain.
Remove the blower motor and check inside for water.
Don't commit to having a new matrix fitted until you are absolutely sure that that is the problem.
If a garage is doing the job, it will not be cheap as there is a lot of time involved.

I was put off doing it for months by posts on forums saying how bad it was to do. The truth was that it was MUCH easier than I expected.
If you are a competent DIYer, then you should be able to do it without too much hassle.

At the end of the day, it's your money to spend how you like.

Thanks Frank.
Are the hose connections on the outside? ie engine bay.
Ive checked for leaves under the windscreen. Is that the plenum chamber. Like a grid with hole underneath  and input to blower motor.
Ill check blower motr as suggested.
Ill have a look at work involved after removing lower dash to inspect heater blower.

Yes

That's the one, pour some water on the windscreen with a hosepipe and make sure that the drain tube can keep up and that water doesn't back up in the bottom.
Does the rusty water feel & smell oily or just like water?
Ill check blower motr as suggested.

Fish
It takes quite a long time to get the heater in and out, and it can be quite fiddly, but it is do-able.
Don't know if my guide to the job is still in the technical notes section?
EDIT: it is - http://www.autosleeper-ownersforum.com/t3633-boxer-heater-matrix-change

Thanks for the write up Frank.
I wiped the drips with tissue paper and noticed the paper stained pink. I then dipped the header tank and  it showed the same colour unfortunately.

My van just has a guard around the gearchange cables where they go though the floor, I left this in place when I was removing the heater as I didn’t think it would be in the way, but it was! I managed to fiddle the heater around it but I slackened it off and swung it to one side before replacing the heater to make life a little easier.

Is there any gear lever "adjustment " involved here.  i.e.  would I need to adjust linkages etc to select gears after re- assembly?

… pull the now loose heater box forward and manoeuvre it left.

Drop the heater box out, just took you 25 minutes and a real struggle, refitting is just as bad, take photos as you strip it and make notes, otherwise you will forget something and have to remove parts again.

I assume 25 minutes just to remove matrix. Not all the dash etc.

Thanks

Leave the cables connected to the gear lever mechanism and they won't need any adjustment when you refit it

The 25 minutes were my mentor's words not mine  smile!  I believe he meant 25 mins for removing the dash & heater. I didn't time the job and I did stop for a couple of tea breaks.
IIRC the matrix just slides out of the heater box after removing 4(?) screws. You don't have to dismantle the heater to remove it.
