Hartal door fault and MOT Empty Hartal door fault and MOT

Post by padraigpost Fri Feb 10, 2017 2:27 pm

The hartal habitation door on my Bourton has developed a fault which I believe is broken springs inside the door, this makes the door difficult to lock and unlock, the van is due for mot in a few weeks and if the door is not repaired by then does anyone know if this would this be a mot failure?

If the door is closed properley it should not affect the MOT

We had problems with the Hartal door on our last van and after a few attempts at sorting replaced both the door catches

had the same fault on my Nuevo both springs (top and bottom) failed within days leaving me in the back end of nowhere with a door that could not be closed!!!

But that doesnt answer your question.  I have never had the MOT man even look at the habitation door so if you can get it closed (or better still locked) then you will (in my experience) be fine

BTW as an emergency fix if you tie a small loop of thin string over the pivoting catch and use it to pull the catch closed (practice the movement first with the door open so you can see what is happening) then having got the door closed and the catch engaged insert a bar (a pencil or some such) and twist the loop until its tight and then lodge the bar in the opening of the door to prevent it unwinding.
A bit heath robinson but it held my door secure for a couple of weeks and several hundred miles

Hi Don, I'm sorry to read that you seem to have had the same door catch fault that my Winnie has also experienced in the past year. The door catches of both top and bottom locks are operated by a specially shaped spring. I found no way of just buying replacement springs; I ended up buying the complete door lock from A/S at £30 each. The top lock is different to the bottom one, so you have to buy the pair (it's very important to say to A/S that the locks are for the Hartal door).

As raymondo says above, I would not expect the habitation door to affect an MOT, providing it is locked closed.

I expect to have an MOT on Winnie this year also. I will visit City West Mercedes, Sowton Ind. Est., Exeter, to have it done.

Best regards, Barry.

Thanks for all replies, sorry for delay but site wifi very poor, have got van booked in at Marquis for them to check on return.
Barry, did you fit the new locks yourself and if so any problems? I will also be taking mine to City West, I don't know if they do it or contract it out I will have to ask Brynn, hope you are keeping well.
I will update after Marquis inspect it, but am away until late March

Update for this thread, as I will be passing close to the A/S works on my way home in March I contacted them and they gave me a workshop slot to have the job done on my way home so all credit to A/S for this, I will update when repair completed.

Great service from Autosleeper service center, left van at factory at 8am. Phone call from Mark at 10am. said van would be ready at 10.30, on collectionMark said they had also replaced 2 cracked fridge vents F.O.C. Very courteous and knowledgeable service from Mark and the team, the total price for both top and bottom hartal door spring replacement was an amazing £78, yes only £78, I was amazed as I expected much more, once again many thanks and great service from Autosleeper.

£78 is actually less than I paid a local repairer to fix mine - from memory I paid £90+ (but Im sure it was less than £100)
