Nuevo Heating Empty Nuevo Heating

Post by JohnSc Mon Jan 23, 2017 11:34 pm

We have recently bought privately a low mileage 2005 Nuevo 2 berth, replacing an older & smaller camper.

We are very pleased by it, but rather baffled by the heating controls. Can anyone explain how they work and how best to use them.

I believe that the Truama heater unit works from both electric & gas. My understanding is that the controls on the control panel showing '500', '1000' and '2000' settings with a rotating thermostat is the electic control whilst n main power. Can this be used in conjunction with gas or only as an alternative.

There is a control on the left of the unot agaon with a thermostat which ignites & controls the gas. This seems straightforward. The control on the right of the unit is for the fan blower operation. Is this better than just convection heat?

Most confusing is the slider on the fan control showing what I think is a lame on the left, 'O' in the middle and 'A' on the right. What is this for.

One other thing - opposite the heater below the 'cocktail cabinet' is a switch labelled 'radio isolation switch'. Any idea what this is for or does.

Although I have a set of instructions for the camper they are not ever so useful.

Any help is much appreciated,

Thanks,

John

The Truma heater can be used on both gas and electric together. The fan controller is o- off, A - auto, fan speed controlled automatically, M - manual control by the rotating switch. Use of fan will distribute heat around the van much quicker and stop overheat.

Radio isolation switch is to switch off radio remotely, AS modified original radio power to work off the Habitation battery rather than the vehicle battery.

Nuevo Heating Empty Re: Nuevo Heating

Post by Peter Brown Tue Jan 24, 2017 12:05 am

To amplify the earlier post:

There are three components to the electrical element that can be used independently or together as either 500, 1000 or 2000 watts, this allows you to use the electric heater on low amperage site hook ups and gives a crude control of heat  availability.  The centre of the control unit is a thermostat that can be set to give a finer control to the heat level on any of the power settings.

The gas regulator on the fire can be set to control the maximum heat output from the gas burners.

As stated above both gas and electricity can be used together either for a fast heat up or for gas to supplement a low electric power setting.

If the blown air system is used, the M (manual) setting is for blowing cold air in summer and the speed of the van is directly controlled by the control knob.  The A (automatic) setting is for the blown air heating.  If this is to be used the thermostat for the electric heating should be set to maximum or the gas regulator set to high.  The control knob in the middle of the selector switch sets the van temperature, the speed of the van being controlled electronically under the influence of a thermostat in the heater.

JOhnSc, if you introduce yourself in the forum linked above with a summary of your camping experience, that aids those who reply to your posts.

PS do not leave the radio switch in the habitation area permanently on because if you do, even with the radio off, you will drain the leisure battery.

Yep, I agree, Peter has it covered. Just one more thing regarding the water heater thermostat you mentioned, although you can set the water temperature to whatever temperature you like when running the boiler on gas, when using the electric element it heats up to maximum and is not governed by the thermostat.

your setup is identical to mine (2008 Nuevo) and it the thermostat (part of the 500/1000//2000 knob) is anything like mine set it to max and leave it reducing it even slightly will cause the heating to cut out even if there is frost on the bedding!

Peter is correct in his description of the system on our Nuevos but in practice I do find the electric system a bit problematic.

After I have warmed the van up on the 2000 watt setting I keep the thermostat high and switch to the 1000 or 500 setting depending on how cold it is outside.

On gas the van is warm on the 4 setting on the gas knob and this seems to stay at a steady temperature inside.

At night on electric I tum the stat to 6 and the switch on 500 and leave the fan off

If it's cold in the morning I set everything to max again turn the fan on and we stay under the duvets til it's warm.

I always turn the heating back to lower wattage when using the small travel kettle and
cooking ring or toaster as I don't want to trip any fuses. Some you can reset on the outlet but others require the warden.

I've just been in the van to put some heat on as it feels really cold in there. I put switch to 2000 and that worked fine through the fire. I then put fan to A and the blower worked through the vents and the heat through the fire deminished. I left it running for half hour. Going back in, the fan has gone off and heat coming out of the fire. The manual fan switch is working so what's happened to the auto A setting?

What number did you have the fan set too when on Auto?

When on Auto the dial is the van heat control. When you first switch on the heater and select Auto, the fan idles until the thermostat in the fire detects it is hot enough to deliver effective hot blown air. If the dial had been set to 2 or 3 it would probably have started blowing after 30 mins but probably hadn't got hot enough to blow on max.

When I want to heat up the bathroom quickly in the morning (bearing in mind that our bathroom is a fair distance from the heater), I switch the electric to 2kw, put the gas on full and the fan to Manual, after 10 - 15 mins I can switch the gas off and put the fan to Auto and all works well but in the intervening time I have started to heat the bathroom.

It's been on for about an hour now so just been back in, heat still coming out of heater but fan on A not working. If I put manual fan on, heat immediately stops from heater but blows hot out of vents. Have now put fan to off and turned down wall dial to 1 . Van warm now so expected heat to stop on setting 1 but still chucking it out full. Left it now and check again in 20 mins.

Now the van is warm, if the wall dial was at 9 and the Auto fan on max I would expect it to blow. If not I suspect a fault. I'll switch mine on and see what happens.

Even with the fan idling on Auto there should be a gentle airflow, if you have no air blowing at all it must be a fault.

I think I have found the problem. If I press lightly on the fan slide switch, the fan goes off, if I press down in the slot then the fan comes on again. Obviously a poor connection inside the fan switch. Now need to find a way to get at it.

Make sure 12v switched off.
Lift the gas regulator knob up and off (its not fixed)
one hand each side at the top and pull forward from the wall quite firmly - its held in by sprung clips, it will only come forward a little way.
Look down the gap and you will see the two spring clips, move them up or down (cant remember) to release completely.
DONT pull towards you!
lift off bottom rests and over flexible gas control rod.
place cover on floor but don't pull away from wall yet
look behind and you will see a connectorised cable connected to the top near the A/M switch, pull the connector off the cover.
The cover is now free and you can move it to work on it.

Have a hoover and old paint brush ready to clean the dust out while you have the cover off.

I thought it might be my hab check engineer who's called Gary and he once gave me a talk on how to get the best from my fire. As normal I've forgotten most of it but I remember him saying keep the fan on low. I will ask again when he comes for the next check. confused3
