bedford SV100 fuel tank

Post by tajmall on Fri Jan 13, 2017 7:26 pm

Hi my recently acquired Bedford Autosleeper (SV100 I think !!!) 1983 2.3 diesel -  had fuel problems whilst getting it home. Decided to replace primer and filter but when took old one off the inlet hose is full of gunk, so gonna take tank off but have been advised might be better to replace tank rather than flush it. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement/refurb or if another tank from something else is useable ? I am in County Durham in the North East of England.
I am totally new to this but have a brother who is a mechanic and can do the work but he is used to working on newer cars and we would appreciate any advice :-)

Hi Tracey
Worth a try on Ebay or any van breakers in you're area?, parts used to be easily found in 80-90s

HYou should be able to clean out the tank I have to do this on boats with tanks that are part of the hull. It would be an idea to clean out or replace the fuel lines and replace any old filters. on the engine should be a lift pump this may have a gauze filter that will also need cleaning. Should be good after that. Pipes etc will need cleaning even if you replace the tank. Good luck it's a smelly messy job.

A few years ago my dad used a product to re-seal the inside of the fuel tank in an old car he was restoring. It was a very effective method as the tank was full of small particles of rust and debris.

Quick update - so far haven't needed to remove tank yet - tried various things but not had much time but today we got the engine started and ticking over nicely so happy days smile!

There is a club (think it's called the vx490 club) which caters for CF owners as far as spares are concerned. If the tank was standard CF fit they may be able to fix you up.  Also handy for any other stuff you may need
