Post by big'nuf Thu Jan 05, 2017 10:21 pm

Me again,
I have the silly whale pump water filler and have to use the square block thingy with flat hose to fill up....
How do I top up on site? I am used to topping up with a bucket but you can't just pour water into the filler, can yoiu?
Any ideas?....and no, I dont want to move the van lol

Hi Les it's dead easy I use it all the time just take a selection of fittings to fit various tap threads and sizes and then just snap your connector on.  Do make sure 12 v system is switched on otherwise nothing will happen.

What you describe is more likely used on what's termed a 'service pitch' (has it's own tap to connect hose for continuous fresh water to your van via the whale connection. The alternative is the much shorter version (metre in length) with a submersible pump on one end that you drop into a water carrier there to plug into the whale inlet. We have both filling options but use the latter with an 40 litre aqua roll to easily transport water from the nearest tape. There are other makes of such water carriers or conventional carry containers.

If you don't want to move the van then simply use a bucket or a water container and the filler block with the pump on the end as Paramedic describes.  Bake sure that th ewater pump setting on your control panel is set to Both, as well as having the panel switched on.

I have the truma filling system which is similar to the whale and have recently found and bought a collapsable plastic container with a large filler cap on top that the pump fits through. Not tried it yet but hoping less or no spillage transporting water from the tap and easy to store when not in use. It is item no 161909050182 on eBay.

Just ordered one of those. Thanks for info.

In my present van I have been using a jerry can with a spout but lifting and pouring is a bit of a pain although doable. With the new van on order filling with one of these and the electric pump will be easier and being collapsible will take up less room.

I do not know the water points on your van, but I have a Whale input and also the conventional round one unlocked with a key. If I need to top up without moving the van, I use a watering can to fill via the round one.

I also try and get near a water tap and use the Whale with an extension hose or just a long piece of hose pipe, I do disconnect from the tap so others do not get upset.

You can't. You could get a open filler fitted so water can be poured in, but without you can only fill using the hose fitting with or without an external pump.

Perhaps if you want a hole in the wall filler with locking cap you could get one fitted at Autosleeper at Broadway.
I had it done, it took a couple of hours and cost about £190
I now have a choice. I believe they regularly are asked to install a second conventional filler point.
Perhaps not too far from your location. I am in Cornwall and stayed over night at Broadway Caravan Club site.
Mark at Autosleepers is very helpful.

Our Kingham came with this system and two types of filler pipe, both went up the loft with all the other stuff we'll never use [it's a long list]. We still fill with a hose.

You can stop over at the service station yard with electric hook up, just make sure that they know that you are doing this.
