Me, again (Allan) - I also has gearbox problems with my 2001 (1.9 TD)Peugeot Boxer Talisman GX. Couldn't engage 2nd. without a crunch - sometimes had to wrestle with gear stick to to get 1st! In the end sent off the gearbox to a specialist gearbox repairer and had it re-fitted after a service - it now works well enough - not perfect - it's always felt a bit industrial! not like a smooth car gear change. My job cost about £900 in the end - don't know what the cost would be for a reconditioned gearbox - if you find one.
Good luck#

It might be worth taking it to a local gearbox specialist who can take your box out and recondition it on site. I had to do this with my Clubman as 4th gear whined like crazy. A local gearbox specialist had the van for a week and repaired it. It was not cheap but possibly a better solution than a local garage taking it out, sending it away on a pallet, getting it back and then refitting. Depends if you have a decent gearbox firm near you I suppose.

Hi Kimb

I found an independent Peugeot specialist with gearbox skills and a supplier of gearbox parts in Italy; my 1st/2nd gear synchro problems are completely sorted. I posted details in the forum in the link below:

http://www.autosleeper-ownersforum.com/t19804-peugeot-boxer-gearbox-synchro-solution

No guarantee that these guys can help but gearbox parts are definitely available outside the UK....

Cheers

Phew, good luck! It does seem unlikely that it's totally impossible to get any parts worldwide. Hopefully you now have some sort of solution. Good luck

According to the opening post it is only a fifth gear that is needed. I just searched 'peugeot boxer fifth gear' on eBay and 31 of them came up.

5th gear jumping out

Post by kimb on Wed Jan 11, 2017 5:23 pm

Thanks for replies.Found a recommended gearbox garage locally who got the parts and all done and dusted in 4 days.He also said the gearbox was contaminated with water due to pipe dripping water in. Since read this is another common problem so he has moved that for me. Only the windows now and back at Broadway next week. Fingers crossed. Kim

Interestingly it was water ingress that was the root cause of my synchro problems; water in the oil had corroded the surface of the synchro cone on 1st and 2nd; the resulting rough surface had abraded away my synchro rings until they stopped working altogether. Regular gearbox oil changes and weekly outings (no winter layup) to keep the gears coated in oil should ensure it doesn't happen again. Fingers crossed!!!!

By the way I do have the longer drain pipe but there is still a buildup of water on top of the gearbox after heavy rain...

Cheers

Hello , as a CItroen technician for over 25 years . I have seen 5 th gear problems on relays/ boxers and It can be as simple as 5th gear nut loose . Easy fix just remove gearbox end case and check . If loose fit new nut with lock tight , if I remember right it is indented to lock . Do check that the scuttle drain is away from gearbox as as others have said water ingress is a real killer for the gearbox. Hope that helps .
