Overcab has been modified as permanent space.

Post by gordyjackson on Thu Sep 22, 2016 9:47 pm

I have a 1999 Amethyst and is has a permanent over-cab space.   It looks like it has been modified by someone as the fabric is different from the rest of the vehicle.    It has a solid base with no mattress and the same 'lining' (which is a type of hard wearing nylon carpet)  is the same for the sides, the base and the roof.   I'm fairly happy with it as we use it to carry bedding, furniture and generally use it as a 'loft' but it's not that practical as a bed space as there is no safety net, no mattress or padding to sleep on and this carpet has covered up the little tinted windows on the sides.
I wondered if anyone else had got this same arrangement and wondered about making the base 'moveable' and I'd like to expose the side windows to make it a bit cosier up there.   I think I could use a decent inflatable camping mattress for the base.

I'll try and add some photos to this post as I'm sure they would help but any input would be greatly appreciated!
Best Regards
Gordon

Is it possible that someone has simply removed the lifting door that covered the opening? I've owned one A/S high top with roof bed and one without - generally if it was originally designed with a roof bed I would expect to see carpet-covered "rails" on either side extending out from the opening, which the additional bed panels rest on.

Cheers  for the reply, I have had not all part this weekend with a view to doing something with it.   I wanted to create a slit in the sides to utilise the side windows but gave up when i saw that the timber was glued to the glass itself!   The construction of this bunk looks pretty solid and permanent and having now seen one with a cupboard I'm happier with what I've got now!   in fact I've bought a 7.5cm inflatable mattress, fitted a small reading light and intend to swap out the MPK pop up vent for a clear dome heki to give a bit more 'view' from up there.   I've gone from it being the short straw to sleep up there to the kids fighting over who's turn it is so I think that's a win!!!  I'll get some photos and add them here,   everyone loves a cosy interior photo!!

I can't tell from your pic as it looks like the curtains are closed are the curtains on a track? if so that would suggest it should have a bed up there. Here is a pic of my medallion the whole cupboard front and surround drop down to make the bed.

Thanks for that,  mine doesn't have that cupboard,  it's all open and the 'base' comes right up to the back of these wall cupboards.   To be fair, the space up there is huge and might even be benefiting from the lack of folding bits and pieces etc?
I'll have a bit more of a go at these side windows very soon and I'll update as I go!

The above picture is our van. My wife decided to cover the front bed with this. Its just a sewn together screen with ring on elastic on the corners and it can be removed in a flash

Brilliant!  I love the idea of the map!   I might have a go at the weekend at altering mine and post some pictures!
Many Thanks

Im not finished yet. The map will be used to cover a piece of wood that fits perfectly into the gap of that orifice and will be stretched over it after it is hinged to the top allowing me to open it up and secure it to a flip over arm on the roof if we need to either get into the bed area or if my grandkids stay over, thats after the whole thing is edged with picture frame beading and an old fashioned clock mounted in the middle.

The above is the finished product. 1/4 inch ply cut and covered then hinged and bolts for transit. It lifts up and hooks to the roof when needed bu it covers a multitude of sins now, lol. My wife calls the upper bed the glory hole. anything we dont want anyone to see goes up there, lol.

Cheers for that,  Ive managed to complete re-using the side windows thanks to the help on this forum.   I seem to have ended up with a couple of threads so i'll add these photos to both.
