Getting autosleeper fever, lol.

Post by samleeds on Sat Sep 17, 2016 7:38 pm

For the past week or so I have been all over the country and in and out of e bay and the like looking for a decent autosleeper. I keep missing them or drive for hours to be confronted by slick harry's that would make Del boy look like mother Theresa.

My budget isnt that big, its only £8000, so thats probably why i am coming up short, but in essence I dont know what the hell im looking for. All I know is that I want a reasonably strong easy to drive engine so a 2.5 diesel would be good. The wife likes the longer bench seats as opposed to the one that splits, mainly because she likes her own single bed and the feet or head up on the front seats isnt pleasing her. After that we are pretty open and can spend a little more than our budget if really needed.

If there are any kind soles out there with a few mins to spend and has any advice or could point me at reasonable deals out there, you will ceetainly make my xmas card list as im very soon to be heading for the valium bottle, lol.

Thanks guys and hopefully this time next week i will be on here bugging you all for advice or pointers on my newly acquired autosleeper, providing i can get one. Thanks all.

For your budget you are probably looking at a pre-2000 model.....
Not sure if you'd get a monocoque for that, but  a Clubman would probably fit the bill as the benches are quite long (but still need the add-ins to make up into single beds). Which models have you considered or looked at, and are you looking at van conversion, coach built or what?

hellowave from Worcester. An AS Trident only has a double bed so will be no good for you. Have you advertised in the Wanted section you could be lucky there.

I don`t think you will get a 2000 Clubman for that budget.

I started out with £8000 four years ago, after going up and down the country, all I found were rust buckets, would have cost thousands to put right, some were even past that stage. so had a rethink, rather than buying one that would want a lot spending on it, I wasn`t in a position to do the work myself, and labour charges are not cheap, if I wanted one it was a Topaz at the time I had to up the price to £18,000, but I did get a lovely 2002 van one owner. That model wouldn`t be right for you by the sounds of it.

Clubman would be a better bet, but more likely to be mid or even early 90`s  , pleased don`t be taken in by the scammers on eBay and else where, if it is too good to be true it is usually a scam.

Auto-sleepers hold their price for a very good reason, they are the best. Once you have one, they don`t seem to drop in price, my Topaz I got more for it when I sold it fourteen months later than I gave, I wanted something bigger.

Sorry to put a damper on price but just trying to help. It does come as a bit of a shock when you have a budget like I did and then realise it isn`t enough. I sold my Volvo estate to put towards it, that is one reason my MH is my car, another one haven`t room on the drive. smile! also it is more comfortable to drive than a car.

Good luck with your search and I hope you find what you are looking for.
Best regards,
Margaret

Its likely be a Talbot based Talisman/Executive or the original "small" Transit based Legend.
Agree with the others, you wont get a 2000 or older Clubman for £8k

On eBay there are three Clubmans, a 1995 2.4 VW £9,750

                        Another 1995 Clubman  £9,000

                                    1997 Clubman   £16, 995

Excelsior long seats / beds, £14.995

                                     Pollensa  £14.995

Harmony van conversion 1997 petrol £9, 995 don`t think that is   what   you  are looking for, gives you an idea on prices.

The van I looked at four years ago was a 1995,  more like a 1992 Trophy I suspected a change of interior, or something was`r right for the age,    lady wanted £8,000 and it was rotten,  rust all around the windscreen and cab, goodness knows what other rust there was that I couldn`t see.  looked quite good on the web site. so you do have to be careful.

Good luck, there will be a van out there, just have to keep looking and perhaps have a rethink of what will suit you.

I have just driven down to Birmingham to view a Talisman and it was being sold by a Gypsy, no paperwork cause the van was broken into, etc etc i guess you know the rest. I then went up to Manchester to meet with a man with a Talbot gl. It was held together with tar and filler and the body was all cracks and faded. The inside was pretty ropey and he was shocked |i didnt want a test drive. My wife was refusing to stay as it smelled of dog. Thats a full day I wont get back and a lesson learned, get to the bottom of the info before driving half way round the UK.

Im still smiling though, lol.

Give Valemotorcaravans Tewkesbury a ring. 01684773482. They have a Rimini for sale at the moment, right price. They always have a lot of AutoSleepers in. I bought my Trident off them a few years ago now and it was perfect. Never had a problem with it. Only sold it as needed a bigger van and had a bit more money to spend. They might be able to get you another Autosleeper as these dealers do talk to other dealers. I'm a person who believes in going to a good dealer as you do get a guarantee.

Just noticed it's sold. Give them a ring anyway. They might have another AS suitable.

Honestly, the more you see, the more you can buy with confidence when a good one appears. Remember it's not a waste of time because you are learning and experiencing. Granted however, I'm sure it does feel annoying and a waste of time when it happens!

At the end of the day, there is a lot to be said for buying from a reputable dealer especially if they provide some kind of warranty. Granted that it will cost more, but it could be worth it for the peace of mind, don't you agree?

If he's only got £8000 then buying from a dealer may not be an option.

I have a very good up together fully functioning 1994 Talbot Express Talisman GL with full service history from new, full log of any work carried out etc. Solar Panels fitted and topping up engine & leisure batteries, 2.5L Diesel turbo inter-cooled, air ride rear suspension, Rearview/reversing camera, habitation checked, all wax oiled underneath and so on - interior all original and excellent condition. Bodywork fully valeted/polished. Have had for last 3 years and done many holidays & rallies. Mileage - genuine 64386 at the moment.

Looking to upgrade to a newer model at the end of this year/beginning of next but my asking price is a little higher than the price being quoted (based on research and industry advice)

Totally private sale so bought as seen and tried with no guarantees

Hi Sam

I've just altered your email address so the spybots can't recognise it. Otherwise you were in danger of getting loads of spam and offers of cheap viagra etc..

oh...... I was getting quite excited reading through all the posts in this thread . With the anticipation and excitement building .... looking forward to a happy conclusion only to find that there isn't one yet ! shrugg

Its a bit like getting to an exciting  crisis point in a TV series and then being told that it continues next week .... hugegrins

Good luck Sam ...I'm glad you are not rushing into this, sticking to your guns  and not buying the first thing you look at.
When we decided to buy a campervan 5 years ago I had just 3x weeks to buy and prepare for our planned Easter break .

Like you I found plenty of rubbish. One guy got really angry with me because I turned his MH down. The floor in the cab area was so rotten that it was spongy to stand on.!

We nearly settled on a campervan down in Cornwall but at the last moment I decided that I really needed at least one long made up bed and not 6 or 7 little cushions and the drivers seat . Thank god we didn't go and buy it.

In the end we settled for a fantastic Transit LWB coachbuilt by Horizons Unlimited It was the top end of our budget but the layout was perfect for us.

It turned out that the previous owner had been a dab hand at bodyfilla so I've ended up having to weld in new sills and arches and 2x new front wings but now we have a solid MH thats worth twice what we paid for it.

If you are prepared to some some work yourself you can still find the odd bargain but if I knew then what I know now I would have borrowed some extra money to buy a MH in better condition (or bought from a dealer on credit.) Its a good investment as the value will go up every year. Nearly all the AS  Duettos from 1994-2000 still command prices well above £10,000

Theres been a happy ending..

Sam and his wife came down to Surrey today and put a deposit on my 1993 VW Autosleeper Clubman. Its been owned by my father and then me for the last 21 years and has been loved, and Sam looked like the man to love it some more into the future. Sad to see it go but I bought a newer 2002 VW Autosleeper Gatcombe the other week and whilst I wasn't planning on selling until the new season, it was an amicable agreement and I no longer have to look after 2 campers over winter!!
