IPad virgin!!

Post by Traficlady on Fri Aug 19, 2016 7:33 pm

I'm toying with the idea of buying an iPad air 2 but don't understand how an iPad works as opposed to any other tablet. I currently have a Hudl but the battery's running down quite fast these days.

I'm used to Windows and android so I'm a bit confused about the advantages of iPad over, say, a Samsung tablet.

Does the iPad air 2 have wifi built in? Reading up on them on the internet isn't clear. Would I still need site internet or MiFi or something?

Thanks in advance.

There are those who swear by iGadgets, and those who are not so easily conned. (That should light a fire or two! lol4 )

Apart from being over priced and over hyped, what can it do that an Android tablet can't? And if you can think of anything - do you really want it to do that?

Getting me coat! Whistle1

Really depends what you use it for. If you are used to Android, personally I would stick to that system. I think you are probably paying over the odds for an iPad because of the name. My Nexus 7 tablet on Android does everything I need but I do have a desktop system as well. Horses for courses.........

Hmm. I have my doubts really. Seems that you're better off if you have everything Apple so they sync between themselves. I have an iPod but actually wish it was MP3 so I could drag and drop. I refuse to pay for an iphone, although I've got a windows phone I'm not too keen on. Apple must seem to want to have everything sewn up.

Will keep thinking!

They have wifi built in like all tablets so will need site wifi or myfi, unless you can one that will that will a mobile SIM card and sign up will a mobile phone provider.

My only experience is will Apple iPad which I have had for 3 years with no hardware or software problems.

I'm an Android fan. My wife's Nexus 7 will no longer charge (a very common problem). My son gave my wife an Apple iPad 1st generation which is useless because apple use their own operating system which gets binned after a few years and then needs uploading with a later version but eventually early models cannot be updated. All new apps for iPads need at least ios7, my wife's iPad is stuck on ios6 so can only use apps already loaded but once that app itself is updated, then that app stops. This is all part of Apples  'hold you to ransom' policy.
Myself, I have an HP 7" tablet but battery life is only about 2 hours now, whereas my wife's iPad lasts about 8 hours. So there are pros and cons to both android and Apple. Hudl's are now discontinued, so are Nooks. As usual technology marches quicker than I can keep up with.
Afaik, all tablets are WiFi, some can use mobile data (at a much higher price).
Over to the experts.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Pro 12.2 very pleased with it, had an iPad hated it, sent it back to John Lewis who exchanged it for the Samsung. I have a mobile modem with a 12 month £30 Sim for 12 gb, I don`t have a contract for anything, just PAYG for phone , modem ,tablet. I find this is the cheapest way, at Malvern I had a very strong signal. last year couldn`t get a signal.

What network is it Margaret? I've got a Vodafone mifi sim but it's £15 for 2gb and only lasts 30 days. I had an excellent signal at Malvern too.

It is "3 " Nora cheapest sim around, phone  calls cost 3p text 2p, mobile modem sim  was on offer for a 12 months /12GB whichever is used first, not limited to 1GB a month. Perhaps still is haven't looked if so I will get another 12months one, as it isn`t activated until you use it, so could keep it for another year if wished. I bought mine from a "3" shop but some were on line from the "3" shop or eBay, to top phone up I buy a voucher from any shop that has the top up sign.

Nice to have met you Nora and your new Husband. Will perhaps see you at Lincoln.

Regards,
Margaret

Thanks, didn't know you could get them.

Will have to look into the sim situation.

Margaret, will watch out for you at Lincoln. Are you with the CCC again?

When my last phone came up for change I decided to move to an iPhone from Android due to Androids constant updating etc.  I did change and was generally happy with the phone.

Last year when my Nexus 7 gave up the ghost I decided to look an iPad and ended up buying one which I have been more than happy with.    I think they are well built and very easy to operate. I have found I am happier with some of Apples native apps rather than have to download extra apps for stuff like Calendar and Email.

My wifes Huddle 2 is starting to be a bit awkward so will be thinking about going the iPad or iPad mini for her

It really is down to personal preferences but I would say the Apple stuff is less challenging
than Android.

The other option of course if you are happy with Windows 10 on your PC is to look at a Windows Tablet, they seem to be a lower price and the ones i have seen are ok

You can still get the "3" 12Gb sim for about £25 from eBay or Amazon, makes it extremely good value.

Is your Vodafone on a contract or linked to Vodafone? if so it needs to be unlocked before you can use the three sim. easy to do, take to a phone shop and they will do it for you.

My Modem and phone a Samsung Galaxy were unlocked when I bought them, so not restricted to just one make of sim.

It's on PAYG. Never thought about it being locked but, as you say, easily fixed.

I've ordered the 3 sim from Amazon, same price as eBay but guaranteed delivery tomorrow so I can take it away with me on Monday.

If you need to go on a course to learn how to drive an Ipad, then the that's the best reason ever to stick with Android hugegrins
